Concert Review: Black Party Is An Endless Summer
When I first heard bLAck pARty’s album, Endless Summer, it swished and swashed like waves on a California Beach. Like his album cover, you could picture him digging his feet into the sand, looking at the sunset, and pining that the sun, like love, always has to come down. Awwwww! Of course, the album had its bops and potential to get a party lit, of which his Mercury Lounge performance felt like a balance between a man that wants to think and also no think.
Sometimes, I want to swim in my thoughts and connect their associations like rivers eventually do the ocean, and, other times, if I never have a thought process again it would be too soon. bLAck pARty balances that mentality and shares in terms of love; sometimes wanting to be boo’d up and, other times, not even fathoming possibility. He touched upon a very common truth amongst anyone 35 and under in 2019: do I want a partner or a companion? Do I want to someone to love or call up when I want company for fun? This discussion totally fits his vibe because he is a split between mindfulness and “move ya body” frequencies.
bLAck pARty – 4AM In NY (Official Video) ft. Anajah
If Jhene Aiko, Kari Faux, and Daniel Caesar decided to have a 90’s block party …. it would be bLAck pARty. His show was like a cookout of sounds and higher thoughts masked in sweet synths and “drop it like it’s hot” basslines. It was a perfect mix, especially for the NYC crowd because, in some ways, he represents how much sonic diversity and motivation audiences desire. Nowadays is a great time to be an artists, especially if you define getting lit with a level of feeling lighter and enlightened. When Black Party invited the crowd to dance with him amongst a night of cool songs, stories, and quips, it felt like a solidification that he would find and cultivate a stellar fanbase.
