Concert Review: BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Reveals Its Artsier Side

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn is having its best line-up EVER. The summer festival just premiered, and it is unstoppable in the prime music- acts it is attracting, and its family fun orientation. Whether you are a young Brooklyn Millennial or a pair of parents with babies, age gaps and life experiences do not divide people from wanting good, rock music.

Admittedly, it is a unique experience seeing a one year old girl running around while Cymbals Eats Guitars is playing, but that is BRIC for you. As the young guys blazed their punk-noise, a group gathered before them breezily moshing before the stage. I say “breezily” because this NYC summer has been hot, and the brightness of the day gave people the same exact affect as previous artists, Lake Street Drive or Bilal; no matter what genre people simply sat and listened. Something about sunny day can make even the most politically inclined acts like that of Cymbals Eats Guitars or Polica appear casually “resistant”. While exiting Cymbals dropped and “F-Trump”, and walked away as if they had just said “thank you” to a Christmas gift. Polica followed by amping the crowd with a sound closer the headliner, Yeasayer. It was as if we were sonically stepping forward to the main event, but I have to say I love Polica. I had never seen the band perform before but, in short, Channy Leaneagh is my queen. While Cymbals, literally, said how they felt, Leaneagh radiates the ominous fragility and resilience of a broken society in how she moves both vocally and physically. It is as if she a marionette bending and thrashing according to social strings she is eager to break. Naturally, she stood out to me because she was new to my “ electro-rock music sphere”, and I had reviewed Yeasayer before. They too gave an artfulness to social anxiety that makes themes like depression and frustration appear like color palettes in your life’s painting. Moreover, they are a BROOKLYN BAND! Their entering into Prospect Park was like a pack of conquering kings returning to sing victory to their kingdom. In that sense, this BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! show had a distinct, artsy dynamic.

Lake Street Drive elaborated the sunny weather of BRIC’s atmosphere, Bilal elaborated the ease of the ambiance, and Yeasayer proved its artsy origins. It seems that each show brings out a special quality to BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn that shows it is not a series to be missed. Truly, you will not find as expansive and inclusive event in NYC where people from all walks of life, unite and connect 100% over the desire to serenely listen.
