Concert Review: Caroline Polachek Is Twilight At Bowery Ballroom
I love Caroline Polachek. I review a lot of artists, but there are a few that land in my sacred iPod. (I am talking the original one that can carry 80GB and looks like the white, metal brick!). When you make it to my personal listening, it is because you have tapped into my soul. Polachek’s debut solo album is coolly beautiful; like a trip through David Bowie’s Labyrinth. Hence, her Bowery Ballroom show felt like a mystical adventure through “adulting.”
With a massive screen that misted as if every image was plucked and picked by the visual director of Beautiful Creatures, entering her show was like walking into a fantasy film, a la Twilight. All we needed was Edward Cullen and Jacob Black to pop in and ramp up a romantic discussion of ‘Who would you rather? Werewolf or Vampire?” You may find that assessment facetious, but it taps into a truth that Polachek embraces about growing up and choosing the people that will stay around: everyone has their darkness. Part of being an adult is realizing you don’t throw away people because they have flaws because then you will end up alone. Instead, you choose who you toss out because they amplify yours.
Caroline Polachek – Ocean of Tears (Official Video)
You don’t want somebody that loves you jealous or quietly revels in your tears of disappointment. Who needs frenemies? Really? Polachek’s music ranges from spiritual to sexy to stunning because she paints life like a hall of art at the Louvre. You enter one room of your life and find Roman Statues of all your heartbreaks and enter another one to find Renaissance paintings of all your laughs. She is picturesque in her verses. Moreover, the way she presents herself and her voice as if they were born from the beacon of a lighthouse is gorgeous. It makes her higher notes feel like the call for the lost to be found.
Caroline Polachek – Door (Official Video)
This may seem strange but from “Door” to a cover of “Breathless,” Polachek’s show made feel the beauty of being an adult woman. Her show was inadvertently feminist by celebrating the awe of being cosmically female. The magic of knowing every person is born from stardust and you manifested into a woman: a literal, female star. With that capacity, HOW COULD SHE NOT END UP IN MY IPOD! For More Information On Caroline Polachek Click Here.
