Concert Review: Communist Daughter Build Windows To My Soul At Music Hall of Williamsburg
You ever hear a song, and it makes you wonder if the artist took your diary to write the lyrics? They just know too much about how you feel, think, and move through this green earth to claim their “original” song is not yours. Playing to a packed house, Communist Daughter showed that they can go far in this industry/ world by making the ordinary things of life feel extraordinary.
Communist Daughter – Keep Moving
Keep Moving
Some of the famous people in the world/history are remembered because they were “ordinary”, which fascinates everyone because everybody feels ordinary, despite wanting to feel “special”. Thus, the magic of Communist Daughter as a band is that they make “ordinary” appear special through lyrics that could make a raindrop have a tsunami of worth. For one, their words are pin-pointed to the slightest details that make a room feel like a home, which is through spiritual connection. A couch is nothing unless you recall every kiss, laugh, and tear you had upon its linen. It. is in this sense that Communist Daughter surprised me in bringing forth a Saturday night concert that had way more depth then I expected. Their live show truly leaps forward the intricacies of their music and words as little needles prickling forward in search of life’s threads. Such a capacity is why they can reach The Lumineers or Mumford And Sons potential of stardom, in that every one has their go-to bands to remind them that life is fun beyond the nightclub domain. Yet, its not hard to be feel like life is worth living through the voice of John Solomon.
Communist Daughter – Hold Back
Hold Back
Solomon’s vocals are like the weighted, heavy tone of man trying to lull a child to bed. It is as if his voice carries pounds of pain and wonder that he tries to scale to balance by singing softly. As he hovers over the mic and closes his eyes, you imagine that Solomon must be seeing the visions he stirs in songs like, “Rolling A Stone” and “Hold Back”. He has an almost dangerous ability to conjure every moment you felt distant from your life in one lyrics. I say “dangerous” because you do not expect to confront your loneliness in a concert crowd, but, why lie, and act like we all do not seek sad songs or ones that shed light on our darker sentiments. When Solomon’s vocals blend with his wife Molly’s, you feel an ease enter not only him but the song as well. She has a sweet, thoughtful voice that holds Solomon’s more shrouding sentiments in the palm of her vocals, like a bird coddling a broken wing. After all, loneliness and loathing can inhibit a soul from feeling apart of life. With drums and guitar arrangements that are slightly more “up-tempo” than their lyrics, it seems Communist Daughter has dedicated their shows and songs to finding the “up-tempo” of life.
Communist Daughter – Balboa Bridge
Balboa Bridge
I would recommend Communist Daughter for anyone that wants confront their melancholy of life through music, which is everyone. After years of being called “promising”, I truly feel that their promise of stardom can and will come true because their concert showed that. Yet, what I loved most about them is that the only promise they care about is the one of happiness and love we all wish to come true in our life.
