Concert Review: Dawn Is The Queen of The Night

When Dawn walked out with “Queen of The Night/ Whitney Houston regality” I was floored. I do not know what I was expecting from her Murmrr Theatre performance, but her ability to be, simultaneously, stunning and raw was the equivalent to uniqueness. You cannot find too many songstresses that can look like a Vogue cover while talking about their personal homelessness and struggles Post- Katrina.

Vocally, Dawn is powerful. She moves her body as if her notes are being pulled from every muscle; you can even see it in the pictures above. For her, it is not the range that is important, although she certainly has one; it  the reason behind the octave. Why do you hold a note over a certain lyric? Why do you hit a D-flat to embody a particular emotion? She is so precise in her words and presence, you feel taken aback that her sufferings have left her so wise and strong. After all, we do not have to heal from our hurt, but her cover of Bad Wolves’ “Zombie” and “Vines,” showed her determination to get clear.

Sometimes, we think getting happy is “cheap,” and we find a million reasons not to be joyous. As Dawn explained her difficulties in the music industry, she hit on a note that was so powerful. Self-love is not about loving yourself for a moment or when you are good; it is about loving yourself through a lifetime of flaws until you get better. This notion pulses through her voice to make it the essence of emotive. Though her set was, or felt, short, you felt impressed for a lifetime. Who what this queen that knew what it was to be treated like a peasant, but sang her songs like an angel?

The most important win for Dawn’s performance is that you could, easily, see her again. At times, we see an artist once, and that, in an odd way, feels like enough. They feel complete to you, and now you can stick to the record. Yet, from “Hey Nikki” to “Jealous” you wanted to see more of Dawn because she combined the sacredness of music with the sacredness of being. For More Information On Dawn Click Here
