Concert Review: Catching Some Dayglow At Mercury Lounge
If there is one thing about me that I hope never changes, it is how easily I laugh. I love to laugh, which my readers know because I usually categorize artists by their funny personalities as much as their talent. Hey! If I pay 10 or 100 dollars to see you, I, at least, want to have light chuckle. It is the little things that count, and Dayglow showed that at Mercury Lounge.
Passing out football cards with his picture posing like a high school jock with basic skills, I was enamored by Dayglow. From cowbells to cowboy hats, he is incredibly silly and jovial; redefining what it means to be a nerd. Yes, he is going in my category of nerdy artists but, again, if you read me often you know I consider myself a nerd. No, I may not have a 30 pound back-pack and zoom around hallways eternally locking for my calculus class, BUT I don’t fit in. I mean I do and I don’t, which is the magic of tracks like, “Nicknames” and “Can I Call You Tonight?” Dayglow presented his songs as if they were the background themes for anyone that can’t seem to squeeze into a social class or label.

We are not jocks, goths, band geeks or, when we grow up, the cool crowd of co-workers that gather at the water-cooler or local happy hour to act as if, at 4pm, the office kitchen becomes a nightclub. We are just regular and there is a “glow” to that. Hence, Dayglow is so coolly uncool. He swings his guitar and bounces around like a kid with all access pass to Harry Potter World, Moreover, he smiles at the crowd with a balance of self-confidence and self-consciousness like, a man that knows he is deranged but harmless. Frankly, I can relate and, most of us, can, as well. We are fun-loving and crazy; trying to figure how both those qualities combine to build spontaneity in our life and love choices.

Dayglow’s lyrics and rhythms swerve with randomness like a car with a destination to “somewhere.” Yet, you eat it up because A) It is Dayglow, and we love him for it and B) Somewhere is not just a West Side Story song. For most of us, it is where we want to go with “MORE COWBELLS” and laughs abound. Thus, Dayglow gave a show that made the crowd dance and boogie, with happiness, to a voice and sound that is surprisingly groovy when live. For More Information On Dayglow Click Here.
