Concert Review: Deb Never Is The One You Call At Bowery
At Bowery Ballroom, Deb Never felt like the one you call when you need to chill out. She is that friend who will hear your 20 minute “self-pity party,” and then say, “Wow, that sucks. So you want to finish the movie?” Sure, she may respond to your hurt with fun, but you cannot take away that she listened. For Deb Never, life can suck, but a poor attitude does not alleviate that.
You hear it all the time, “Why are you being so negative?” or “It’s not that big a deal. You will be fine.” These words have been used in nearly every dark situation, and I am convinced someone will even say them during the Apocalypse. Yet, in the end, they are true. No situation can end you, and, in that, there is a safety and even a relaxation that flows through Deb Never’s voice. Similar to Dominic Fike, her energy is like a yo-yo. One minute she is sitting down with her guitar, closing her eyes, and pouring her soul over her lyrics like milk over cereal….. or is it cereal over milk…. Discuss. The next minute, she is jumping around and shaking her limbs as if her joints were as malleable as plastic. That type of energy is EXACTLY what people love in concerts because it fulfills our need to be hyped and introspected.
Deb Never – Ugly (Official Music Video)
Sometimes, I want to roll into a party like I am Mariah Carey floating on champagne and my own high notes. Other times, I want to go “Mr. Robot” and completely erase my carbon and internet footprints. Music is a moody thing, which is why, sometimes, I can listen to The Weeknd and get in my feelings and, other times, all I can do is listen to Drake’s In My Feelings. Deb Never serves both those energies, which makes her an all in one deal. You go to her show when you want to party or feel like your ex has left you parted. It is a brilliant, natural ability that cannot be taught as much as owned from birth. With vocals and melodies that are simple in flow, Deb Never became my Deb Forever.
