Sam Cooke lives on in Durand Jones, and that is a hefty comment. From John Legend to Leon Bridges, the industry will always look for reminisces of Cooke’s personality and vocality because there will alway be a market for him in every ere. Why? Because he had a voice and swag that made love feel soulfully dreamy: whether it got you up from your seat to dance or made you want to sit and stare out the window as if clouds were forming your lover’s face. All we needed was a pack of hanging streamers, bows in our hair, and a banner that said ‘Welcome Back Heroes,” to feel like were were at some vintage, “doo wop” party you see in films: where army gents and young dames swing dance upon meeting. Yes, this a a surreal scenario and feeling, but Durand Jones and The Indications seem plucked out of that cinematic idealization of the “good, ol days.” While a history book may carry a consistent series of violence, the movies and music always portray the past as this big, beautiful place where even “feeling down” was just a new opportunity to learn what was up. Hence, Durand Jones had a very cinematic, MC quality to his stage presence; hosting and dancing through an experience that made his audience feel like movie stars.

While his voice croons notes as if he swathes and cradles them in his soul before releasing them, in terms of presentation, he has an inherent “MC” qualities; singing his songs and speaking to the crowd as if he is giving them textbooks of fun and love. He sees a lyric like a “how-to” guide on living and I found that notion both beautiful and charming because I never saw a verse presented like that. It is as if melodies are opportunities, hooks are risks, and choruses are unions of love.
