Concert Review: Emotional Oranges Show Up And Show Out At MHOW

It was only their second show ever, and Emotional Oranges felt like veterans. Though the duo’s personal names and histories feel drenched by mysteries and legends, their music is clear and filled with hits. Whether she is Adele’s vocal coach or he is Drake’s music engineer is “up for grabs” as truths, but I would believe it after seeing their Music Hall of Williamsburg show.

Emotional Oranges are a show to dance. They create songs that makes you fail the “I Dare You Not To Move” challenge. Hence, their interspersing of classic, R&B hits, #Ashanti, with original tracks from their record, The Juice Vol 1, felt like a red carpet being rolled out for the new King and Queen of succulent R&B. Whether purposefully or inadvertently, they were declaring that they would be at the helm of MANY R&B seekers that want a new school version of the “old school.” Those of us that want the KC & JoJo sexy, lovelorn, and bouncing ballads that make you want to twerk and text “I love you” to your partner.

Vocally, both members share the singular, smoothness of R&B voices. While they may do an occasional riff or ripple through an octave, they keep their voices steady. For them, they are the ground from which their rhythms sprout, and they sure do grow. From “Motion” to “Personal,” the audience was sucked into a wave-pool of rhythm that they could swim for eternity. Naturally, Emotional Oranges ate up the passionate, audience reception because the crowd was devouring them. They could do no wrong, which is a motivating thought if you are an artist having your second show ever.

When they announced that their MHOW show was their second show EVER, I was unbelievably shocked. They moved across the stage and hyped up the audience with a sense of destiny. It was as if they had studied every R&B/ pop superstar’s performance to come up their own style. You could see the many influences that inspired them, while, simultaneously, acknowledging that Emotional Oranges are 100% original. For More Information On Emotional Oranges Click Here.
