Concert Review: Gabriella Cohen Is A Jazzy Queen In NYC

With a quick set, Gabriella Cohen set up to prove she is a quirky, jazzy queen. She is witty and random, which explains why her music swerves and swivels like a dream-cloud on a motorbike; though fantastical and beautiful, you never know where it will rev. Thus, her Mercury Lounge show, made me excited for her her future.

The Brisbane songstress has a playful voice that presses notes downs like they are neon buttons that light up, and people were fascinated to watch it light and press on their hearts. Playing tracks off her newest album, Pink Is The Colour of Unconditional Love, she toys with the audience and quips over her band, particularly “Babyshakes” her guitarist, to leave us in giggles before we enter songs that leave us in dreams afterwards. “Baby,” “Music Machine,” and “Recognize My Fate” are just a few that she played to turn her into a songstress for millennial struggles.

For some reason, probably madness, I kept on thinking of french, literary characters like, Claudine and Madeline. These young girls captivated readers with their spark and vivacity, despite grasping the, at times, short end of life’s stick. Yet, their ability to constantly surrender to relationships and friendships, even after heartbreak, because they knew that love is what life is about, enamored those that question youth’s wisdom. Gabriella feels like those characters, except they have started their own band and jumped on the Almost Famous tour bus. Yes, that is a specific image, but Gabriella smashes together youthfulness, grace, silliness, and the wonderful insecurity of having no clue about life to turns each sentimental ingredient into a warm, pied sound.

What I love about Gabriella Cohen’s sound and verse is that it is romantically haphazard. She shows that we are all crashing into this thing called life, but no star stays in the night sky without, eventually, shooting down. From “Mercy” to “I Feel So Lonely,” she felt perfectly right for a nightly concert; singing to the everyday blues and laughs of being alive in this lovelorn world.
