Concert Review: Gibbz Makes Love Feel Easy At Mercury Lounge
Playing the late show at Mercury Lounge, Gibbz was a lighthearted treat for a midnight set. While most would go the EDM route or seek a heavy bassline to pump up their medianoche, Gibbz felt like a warm, loving embrace of sound. Instead, he showed how harmlessly electric a romantic track can be.
As I looked to see a crowd of people singing his songs such as, “Bright Lights” and “I Do,” I realized the power of Gibbz; he soundtrack people’s happy. He was making the music that wither left couples smooching or friends singing-along. Everyone seemed blissfully gleeful; as if time and space had erased all negativity from their origins. That dynamic allowed Gibbz to approach the crowd like a friend; making fun of his beer or holding a quick chat with a random front-rower. His ability to be easy, in presence and song, promoted his music as a reminder that love does not have to be hard.
So often we hear the phrase “relationships are work,” which they are. Yet, they such an adage presents romantic entanglements like a burden; as if your heart has openly chosen to tie a brick around itself. Yet, Gibbz, even on lovelorn tracks like“Not The One,” makes love feel worth any hiccup because it makes you “smooth.” Yes, it is hard to maintain the joy of love, but nothing will make you happier then it. Thus, from “Falling” to “Say Yes,” the audience glowed with optimism. From his keys to guitar melodies, Gibbz made the worst feel surpassable by your best, and he did it with a voice that stretches in range like a green pasture.
Vocally, Gibbz feels like someone put the earth on a necklace; he, somehow, carries a planet-worth of images and emotions on a single chord. Yet, again, he does it with ease, which is why you love his show. An audience will always be enamored by someones’s effortlessness because that is a sentiment we all want to feel.
