Concert Review: Hozier Went “Sermon On The Mount” At Hammerstein

When Hozier came out to perform, I thought I was meeting Jesus. He was a force to reckon with, and I was ready to be taken to church (pun intended). While I love Hozier’s music, frankly, I didn’t know how he would be as a performer. I expected his rich voice and a few guitar riffs, but he came out to Hammerstein like a man ready to give a sermon more than a song.

Move over, Kanye! Hozier is taking over Sundays. From red roses tossed at his feet like palms to images of people fighting for social justice over red lighting, to equal passion, Hozier is creating music the feels like pop-rock gospels; tracks that could be blasted on radio as much as a Baptist event. For him, his shows are about encouraging people to love, resist against hate, and drink whisky inbetween, of which he did all three. With a globe and book laid out, Hozier’s show felt worldly like, a massive, exciting cultural celebration for people looking to see this world: not escape from it.
Hozier – Nina Cried Power ft. Mavis Staples

To say, Hozier’s show is anything less than electric is IMPOSSIBLE. This man could power a city with lights just by the energy he emotes, and the truth is he doesn’t do much but sing with a voice blessed by the bourbon of angles and play like a man trying to get his wings.Yet, the key ingredient is his confidence. He is a man singing to a world that needs to heal while feeling like a man that has loved all his wounds back to health. For a show that was a 5-night run, with people lining up each day by noon to get to the front, I understood The Power of Hozier.

Hozier is a rip balance of confident and healing, which is not easy when you delve into the purpose of spiritually or societally trying to ignite people to elevate. It is hard not to walk away thinking you are Jesus’s right hand man, but Hozier approaches his audience like he is of the people: not above or even with. When you are of someone, then you are inherently for and from them, and Hozier’s show was a celebration of a man with a holy voice and holistic message: JUST LOVE!
