Concert Review: Jamie N’ Commons Is “The Guy” At Mercury Lounge

Jamie N’ Commons is “the guy” you leave in a room for 5 minutes, and, when you come back, proceeds to tell you a millions stories about what happened while you were gone. He can make 5 minutes in a life feel like a universe of opportunities for change, particularly, elevation of a person. At Mercury Lounge, he used his capacity as a story-teller to enrapture the audience and feel like a country superstar straight from the outback.

This UK’er is hilarious. Firstly, I am always amazed by how well foreigners pull an American when they sing, especially from countries that already speak English. In a way, it shows the power of American music to make people believe that even its accent matters in emoting the song. While Jamie, laughingly, forgot lyrics, he never forgot the meaning of a track. From his longing for his family to being nominated for a VMA with Halsey and Taylor Swift, Jamie always has a story for a song, which me brings to my second point: he is a narrator.

Jamie N Commons – Won’t Let Go

Vocally, Jamie has a classic country-rock voice; heavy, brusk, and lightly girded. It as if the lightest note he can ever hit is hard as a pebble. Yet, THAT is why people loved him and he appeals to the “troubadour” style. His fans came to see him as much for his stories and personality as they did his music. Every show is different, and, a lot of times, there is a “fourth wall” between a crowd and viewers. It is as if the best a musician and his audience can do is interact via an invisible, glass panel; chuckling at light jokes and swaying to songs through labeled distance. Jamie N’ Commons closes that gap, and goes above and beyond to feel like a friend to viewers, which made the audience openly chat with him through his set.

Jamie N Commons, Skylar Grey – Runaway Train ft. Gallant

Introducing new work, while playing to classics such as, “Jungle” and “Not Gonna Break Me,” Jamie’s voice was richly earthy and his humor humbly earthbound. He came off relatable and charming, which only furthered his audience’s loyalty. There are some artists that shine as performers, especially in small venues, because their music and performance run on their humanity. Jamie N Commons is only human, and, in joke and song, the best he can do is figure out how to deal with that. For More Information On Jamie N’ Commons Click Here.
