There are moments in life when every person shuts down, but Feel Something is about the emotional “reboot”. While many songs attack apathy or the beginnings of numbness, Feel Something is about the high and lows of starting to feel again or, at least, starting to open your heart after a long while of it being closed. Apathy is a natural, protective mechanism for a spirit who, seemingly, feels too much, and Young has FEELINGS! There is not one verse that jumps from his voice like it leaping from an airplane, and only has sentiment as a parachute. No matter what he lands on emotions, and listeners will be enthralled by the basic fact that this young man can sing. As silly or simply as it sounds, you will like his voice. In tracks “Sugar Burn”, “Feel Something”, and “Naked”, he vocally strips away all of your guards. He uses scintillating synths like hands undressing your mind and soul so that you can receive again. While apathy makes you believe you are closing your generosity, you are also closing your receptiveness and ability to believe that you can be loved, as well. From his magical duet with Phoebe Ryan, “We Won’t”, and other tracks like, “Stoned On You” or “I’ll Be Good”, Young radiates his lyrics as if they are oaths to either himself or his partner to come “alive” again and not be so resistant to being happy. The message is clear and piercing over a backdrop that uses keys and chords like they are the first time oil and water mixed. It is a strange beauty to have hope over a dark-pop, electrically infused back-drop, but Jaymes Young can make it work because…. he is Jaymes Young.
