Concert Review: Joji Is A King At Bowery Ballroom

Watching Joji enrapture the Bowery crowd made it clear that people are thirsting for the uncomplicated. There is a simplicity to Joji that makes him appear like the most. He really is an open, goofy, and sweet guy that could, literally, scream out, “I LOVE ME, BITCH!” and ignite the audience to have this literal reaction:

With only his debut out, Ballads 1, the house was packed for a show that felt very quick. Yet, Joji has a personality that makes you want to hang out forever, in part, because he reminds you of your friend who is always down. The one that if you texted at 3:30 in the morning, “Yo, you up? You wanna get a slice?” He would text right back, “Waking up! Meet me in 15 at Artichoke!” Doesn’t matter where or what time, Joji is there, and the “aesthetically beautiful” crowd, as he called them, loved that vibe. From couples to hoards of friends, Joji’s music and ambiance was as easy as a test with all the answers already filled.

Joji – SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK

Joji keeps his verses and arrangements simple; making rhythms feel like slices of birthday cake he is passing around. He is like a Chill Trap King; turning basslines into royal, massage oils. They simply drop, drip, and rub into your soul until you find yourself twerking in slow motion. Joji might truly be the only artist that can make a close- up shot of an empty, laundry machine, being turned on, feel like symbolism. Yet, that is why you love him? Every person has a range of artists they like, and Joji feels like the one you hear when you want to “get lit.”

Joji – TEST DRIVE

The success of Joji truly derives on him being fun, and people NEED that! He literally swirls around or side kicks on the stage like, a kid playing in the parking lot while his parents go grocery shopping, and the audience loved it. He is all smiles as he says, “F THE L TRAIN” (this quote touched the audience) and then straight tones his voice voice through tracks such as, “Attention,” “Can’t Get Over You,””you suck charlie,” and “Wanted U,” which all sing to feeling a little needy. We all want somebody to coddle us, to understand our silliness, and love our weirdness as if it is normal. Joji sings to finding that person while doing the shoot by Blocboy JB.
