Concert Review: Jordan Davis Is Lovelorn With Smiles At MSG
I knew what I was in for when I was greeted by a sea of cowboy hats. You don’t see cowboy hats often in the city. Yet, Jordan Davis took MSG down the Old Town Road and brought out the coy mischief of country sound.
From hoping the woman he wants goes single to getting drunk with love, Davis’ songs were for the lovelorn man. More intriguingly, they were for the guy that sees his ex or crush in the backyard BBQ. There she is, looking beautiful as ever, but with someone else; making you recall that every moment you have with her can only go as far as amiable. I love this concept because, frankly, I get a little bored with “the guy” that thinks he can get every woman or claims the ones he had went mad for no reason. Instead, there is a conviviality to Jordan’s style and voice; as if he might be the only guy to really want love.

I call it the “Bruno Mars” effect, and it works like a charm. Present yourself and croon the songs that tell women, “I want love too,” and you will have us at “Hello!” in a concert. This is not because ladies are gullible, but because a concert is an escape to a place where you can believe things are getting better and more loving. With this perspective, Davis took the Hulu Theater like a jovial force. He walked that runway stage with gleeful ownership; absorbing crowd cheers and chugs like a headliner, which is important. When you an opener, at times, you have to act bigger than the headliner.

Vocally, Davis is robust, and, personally, he is equally vast and studded in joy. He has a way of smiling through his range; as if singing comes as much between your happy teeth as it does your vocal chords. It is a charming effect because it made people believe, for a moment, that he was the final act. There was no more beyond Jordan Davis, which means there is much more, from him, to come.
