Concert Review: Jordan Rakei Is A Mood And Mantra

Jordan Rakei plays for the bedroom; whether you are by yourself in it or about to spark fireworks between you and your bae. For Rakei, love, in relationship or self- format, is sensual and self-explorative. At Bowery Ballroom, he felt like someone had lit a scented candle, dimmed the light, put on a their classic record, and allowed either their lover or their self to drift into the beauty of being with you.

Yes, even when you are “boo’d up,” you still want to be with you, and you want someone that makes you feel like “you” with him or her. The fact that Rakei looks and jokes like the most regular guy in the world is part of him being being able to take audiences to their imagined bedroom; where we all go to rest, dream, reflect, and…… you know…….knit. (lol!) He is incredibly talented and creative, which you felt in songs such as “Midnight Mischief,” “You & Me,” “Talk To Me,” and “Mantra.” This man knows how to make love feel so small you think you can hold it, but like a grain of sand it will fall between your fingers. UGH! THE IMAGERY!

Jordan Rakei – ‘Mind’s Eye’ (Live Session)

I’m sure JK would appreciate such parable-inspired descriptions because the man knows hows to outline a verse as if words were made on easels. Vocally, Rakei sings like he is an emotional faucet and he is deciding how much water we all get: drops, drizzles, absolute GUSHES! Crescendos, riffs, and simmering tones ade his voice feel like the flame in the candles his songs lit. “ Rakei sees vocal notes like bursts of energy. He was a total vibe, and saw the mood of his concert as integral to his performance, which not every artists does, and that made him cool.

Jordan Rakei – Wildfire | A COLORS SHOW

Humor and “cool” are certainly tools and terms I use a lot, Both are being redefined in this current, cultural spectrum and concerts are like tiny, testing grounds where twitter feeds and instagram filters come to life. They have replaced what used to be the movie theaters role of after-hours leisure; allowing people to get 10 to 20 dollar tickets to see the person they have been hearing. I say this because Jordan Rakei embodies everything that is “now” in music and will be in creating songs for a generation that wants love, like any other, but also wants to chill out about it.
