Concert Review: KOPPS Are For Aliens At Mercury Lounge
I interviewed Kopps awhile ago, and one thing I noted was that they were fiercely intelligent and unabashedly weird and fun. In essence, they had reached a mental level that most of us wish we could attain: owning our inner weirdo. Yes, owning that little voice in our head that becomes anxious and self-deprecating if we don’t listen. The voice that says be funny, wild, and original, and if we tell her “Shut Up!” she’s like “Fine! Stay stupid and “normal!” SNOOZE! Lead singer,Patricia Patrón, was that voice at Mercury Lounge.
KOPPS – OH DANG DANG (Official Music Video)
From the beginning of their show, especially in contrast to Caroline Vreeland and Roses & Revolutions, Kopps were like….. WTF! (lol!) And I say that most complimentary. Caroline is like a stunning vampiress singing to the lover she lost a thousand years ago, and Roses & Revolutions serve the pop positivity you listen to when you want to feel like you are making better life choices like, actually using your Planet Fitness membership and not checking your exes’ facebook anymore. Thus, when KOPPS brought the party it was like,
And I was like,
Kopps are who they say they are. Upon that stage, they were entertainers for the “fun outcasts;” the people that want to be happy and light-hearted in a world that claims to want the same. Some of us don’t think twice when it comes to shining and embracing the moment, but, in the world, doing that can feel eccentric. Thus, in a shiny romper, Patricia “jazzercised” through her set as if her lungs were made from titanium and could breathe in dragon fire and still feel clear. She is so lively and loving; approaching her audience in voice and interpersonally with a spiritual, welcome sign. People need that and it explains why KOPPS is on the rise. Add on Kyle O’Hara and Travis Johansen that feel like her henchman of fun, equally playful with their sound and crowd, and KOPPS have the ingredients for a serious, concert following.
