Concert Review: Summerstage And LAMC Traen La Candela
I am going to say it. I love Vicente Garcia, and he is my music husband. THERE I SAID IT! You ever hear a person’s music and think, “This is how I am supposed to feel?” The power of a song is that it can reveal to us, not only who we are, but who we should be such as, happy and loving. With a lineup that ranged from Reggaeton to folklórica, this combination of Summerstage and LAMC felt like a celebration of Latin Music as a dance music.
Again, people DANCED! If you go to a Latinx show, you will move your feet. It seems almost impermissible to just sway a shoulder. Thus, seeing couples, especially viejitos, break down into full on choreography moved me. The air carried chistes and chismes with the space being in full on Spanish mode. It was refreshing to hear ur language be first and not be judged or diminished for its beauty. This felt especially true with Vicente Garcia’s performance; an artist that paints the vivacity of love into his verses and delicately emotes them through his voice.

Scoping through his discography, particularly his new album Candela, this Summerstage focused on the vibrancy of love. From Guaynaa’s “Rebota” to Macaco’s “Tengo,” the night felt like a course on the many ways Latin Music, particularly from a male perspective, says “Queremos nuestras mujeres.” From our bodies to our minds, from a booty-shaking dembow to sweet, simple bachata, Latin Music is a genre of love: observing everything from sex to soulful connection. Thus, people were invested in the moment, and it was wonderful to see every race and ethnicity come to meet and enjoy mine.

This Summerstage had to have been one of the funnest, which was not easy considering how HOT it is in NYC. The sun was inescapable, and people were laid out picnicking and sun-tanning through the heat. Yet, the brightness and beauty of the day assured Summerstage felt communally joyous.
