Concert Review: Lilbootycall Rings In Chelsea Music Hall
Sometimes, I wonder what is more important; the music we consume or how we consume it. There is a difference. Most people presume what we consume ignites us, but as music entered the the digital age of Soundcloud Internet, we saw that we can ignite a music…a genre…a star. We had the power to pick our “chosen ones”, of which, at Chelsea Music Hall, Lilbootycall was the chosen one for his crowd.
Frankly, I never thought I would see an artist called Lilbootycall, nor that his name would be preceded by songs that included traitorous thots and “the one that got away.” Lilbootycall approaches love like a man crossed between going to the strip club again or reaching out to the girl he “friend-zoned” when he should have wifed her up. I was shooketh because Lilbootycall is 21 years old and most of his crowd did not have the age to buy a beer. Yet, they felt those songs like they were hungover on love and self-loathing. It was as if they all had had, at least, 5 failed, long-term relationships by ninth grade, which, frankly, some kids in my high school did and it left spiritual, battle scars.

Watching them bounce around in fun and F-bombs made me feel like a 55 year old mom watching Euphoria with her teenaged daughter. I wanted to turn to them and ask, “Do you kids really go through this? Do you feel this way?” Not to sound like a Paul Ryan, but the internet has made “childhood” feel blurred between adulthood. Young people know a lot, but, like adults, do not, necessarily, know how to transfer knowledge into wisdom, which are themes in Lilbootycall’s songs. While I was 16 watching Sailor Moon, Lilbootycall was reinterpreting this cartoon as an ode to “flighty hoes” and sparkling anxieties. I guess I could see it …. never trust a woman with only one outfit and crystals in her hair. Still, no lyric to money, betrayals, dreams, and passions could move him beyond his chill.

Lilbootycall was a puppet-master; approaching his moshing crowd of younglings, with equally multi-colored hair, like a man that did not need to do much to cause a sonic earthquake. His rhythms are smoothly colorful; swishing around like flags in the West Indies Parade. Yet, again, he remained calm: a cool-head seeking a cooled heart, of which his fans hoped it was them.
