Concert Review: Oh Pep! Quirk Up The Rough Trade Crowd

The charm of Oh Pep! is that they feel like a pair of “New Girls” uniting for song. All they need is Zooey Deschanel to join them, and they would be the most unstoppable trio of young women that are beautiful and eccentric. At Rough Trade, they attracted an audience that understood what it is to sparkle with creativity but be treated like anything but a genius.

They say that love makes you dumb, but, in truth, it makes you smarter. The problem is that it does so through mistakes, and some of those errors, particularly, in terms of partners. Playing off their new album, I Wasn’t Only Thinking About You,  it was intriguing to hear nearly every song start with a disappointment; a realization that your fears are either rightful or growing. Yet, by the ned of the very track, from to”Bushwick” to “Your Hammer And Your Nail,” the duo brought back a level of hope. Like an emotional seesaw, they went down, but they got back up again, and coolly displayed to their crowd that going through your sadness or situational boredom is the only way to get out of it.

Oh Pep! are pretty wise for a duo of ladies publicly marveling on how much they sweat on the road, and refusing to take off their fashionable coats despite heat. Yet, that is their winning quirkiness. They feel like “us”, but they write simple songs, such as “Hurt Nobody” or “Doctor Doctor,” on how rich it is to be “us.” Every human being can be a little strange, a little poetic, and a little dreamy. Yet, revealing those aspect of ourselves is not easy, which is why you gravitate to Oh Pep! They do not hide, but, instead, amplify those aspects with Louie elevating voice and Pep’s masterfully melodic playing.

This duo should not be called Oh Pep! They should be called, “Oh, Hypnosis!” (Cue Boos For That Bad Joke) Yet, I say this statement in all seriousness. Songs such as, and felt trance-like; as if your were being enveloped by their messages and melodies to feel a little easy about being so edgy. Everything in life is temporary, and, somehow, Oh Pep! have managed to place the passing instances of life with a scrapbook of songs. For More Information On Oh Pep! And To Buy Click Here.
