Concert Review: Pavo Pavo Welcome Elsewhere To A Myster Hour
I’m really excited about music right now and for multiple reasons. Now, more than ever, the playing field seems a little more equal and open to having an artist that has both talent and a distinct vision. Back in the day, there seemed to be an invisible, music “boxing match;” where to love one artist meant you had to knock out the other. While that still persists, Pavo Pavo are just one more notch in a long line of artists building a music genre that could be called “chill.”
Celebrating their album release, Mystery Hour, the duo carried an excitement that fused into their music like electro therapy. Tiny jolts went into songs such as “100 Years,” “Statue Is A Man Inside,” and “Golden Rod.” The analogy is not far off considering this record felt like a call for people to stop waiting for that “mystery hour” where they take their chance to get what they want for themselves. Thus, for the dream pop duo, Mystery Hour felt like an elevated balance; juggling their usual dreaminess, sadness, and mindfulness into three separate fruit baskets that they needed to combine. The result was an edible arrangement of sound.
From “Close To You Ego” to “Check The Weather,” their songs played to the moments when you give in and let yourself have a “MOMENT.” Yet, for them, an instance is a combination of getting free from what/ who ties you down and reaching for something/ someone better. The irony is they play to that surge of energy and emotions with light-heartedness. Even when Eliza Bagg and Oliver Hill jingle and jangle their bodies and instruments like they are loose sweaters, they never stop feeling cozy and calm. It is as if life, to them, is a journey of relaxations and medicinal sounds that help you reach for adrenalized instances. This notion matches their steady personalities, which made the night feel as cool and crisp as the rain outside.
Eliza and Oliver’s hypnotically, stilling voices create a linear thread in their sound and message. Oliver’s voice feels centered as if his soul is a core, and he is simply letting his vocal warmth rise. Yet, if Oliver is an earthly core then Eliza is a sunny sky. When they harmonize it feels like both are coming together to reinforce your imagination. Add on that they, sonically, sound like Coldplay and Tame Impala decided to have a jam session over some spliffs, chips, and salsa, and it was no wonder the crowd ate Pavo Pavo up. There is nothing like lying down, putting up the volume in your headphones, and letting your mind enter its natural drift. Yet, to achieve that vibe in a concert is a true gift, and Pavo Pavo gave it. For More Information On Pavo Pavo Click Here.
