Concert Review: Phony Ppl Make The Crowd Feel Good At Mercury Lounge
I truly believe 2019 will be Phony Ppl’s biggest year, yet! Since 2010, this band has been hustling, climbing, and bustling with sounds that have built them a loyal following. Their Mercury Lounge show felt like a music manifesto to how a fusion between generations and sounds can exist.
There is a difference between a “feel good song” and a good song; not every good song can make you feel better. There have been gorgeous tracks that never elevated your spirit or, instead, made you sad or enraged. Yet, Phony Ppl’s Neo Soul could, literally, give you a new spirit. Tracks like, “somethinG about your love” and “Way Too Far” made me feel as if stars were being born from my ears. Their sounds twinkle as if they took the light from every star that adorned the skies for generations of music, and stretched it into a new sound, which is what neo-soul should feel like! It should bring the raw heart of our ancestors’ odes to love, and combine it with the newer lessons we have learned.
Phony Ppl are really romantic. Do not be fooled by titles like, “Cookie Crumble” or “Before You Get A Boyfriend;” they are are the sonic stepping stones to getting boo’d up. Moreover, these tracks match their personalities. This group, symbolically, feels like a batch of sage in different scents such as jasmine or lavender; they brim with a vaping clarity and a good humor. Hence, From hugs to banter, their show sweetens the air through their music, presence, and sheer love for fans. This, particularly, goes for Elbee Thrie’s voice, and how he manages to make vocal notes smile. No matter how the soundscape behind him twists and curves in style, his vocality remains steady with good vibes.
Good Vibes may not seem like a “worthy” compliment or review for a group, but it is vital to how we like and whether we come to see an artist again. Every individual, at least once, has met a person that impressed them with their instant aura of amiability and charm; walking away saying, “I wish that person was in my life,” or “I want to hang out with them, again!” Phony Ppl have that same impact, but they do it as a band.
