Concert Review: Ramona Flowers Blossom At Coney Island Baby

Watching Ramona Flowers at Coney Island Baby, I kept on thinking of how much you have to climb to get anywhere. It takes a lot of work to make music, but it takes double to put it out there amongst the masses; assuring it is received. Hailing from Bristol, the band showed how much you need to give just to earn more. Thus, like comic book character herself, Ramona Flowers gave their all for love.

Packed into the Coney Island Baby stage, Ramona Flowers learned to transform their lack of space with an arena feel. I kept on feeling like I was watching Coldplay or Bastille in their very beginnings of conquering the U.S.; when they played the LES circuit before playing the MSG one. Such comparisons were vital in magnifying Steve Bird’s presence, and amplifying that Ramona Flowers is an act to watch or, at least, one that deserves to be watched.

I fell in love with Steve Bird as a performer. He truly gives it all, and stares down into the crowd as if his eyes were slowly absorbing the energy of the room. The crowd was, practically, orbs of light to him as he sang through songs that felt like they warped through the 80’s to get to 2018. You could say “vintage” is old, but in music, especially now, the 80’s are redefining the scene. Synths are fusing into every genre to give a retro soundscape to modern love, and tracks like “Strangers”, “Dramatist”, and “Out of Focus” show why electro marries so beautifully with rock and pop.

Playing off their new album, Strangers, which comes out on May 18, Ramona Flowers understand that a modern hit may sound, sonically, accessible but needs to feel spiritually insightful. Lyrically, they may discuss how their lover wants to have fun, move on, or move forward, but their choruses and hooks staple in people’s minds thanks to Bird’s capacity to emote. He revs up verses like engines that have driven enough throughout days and night to never lose their cool or get exhausted by the same roads of love Thus, from “Same Sun” to “If You Remember”, Bird show adrenaline does not need to burst as much as radiate from your voice.
