Concert Review: RJD2 Serenades City Farm Presents: Summer Series

Mixing his DJ set with a live band, RJD2 was unstoppably good at his City Farm Presents: Summer Series’ show. Industry City is outdoors, and, frankly, I love an outside, DJ event. Something about the streaming lights and the night-sky feels virtuous in contrast to a DJ’s virtual beats. Yet, thanks to his live band and rapper STS, RJD2 felt like a classic DJ.

If Jazzy Jeff decided to warp himself into a video game, you would get RJD2. I first discovered this DJ in Broad City. Hence, my image/sonic comparison is not far off. DJ Jazzy Jeff is a Hip Hop legend, like Biz Markie, and both you styles such as skidding and skipping the turntables. Such moves are not done anymore. As DJ’s work into different areas of music, they also learn different tricks. Yet, RJD2 felt like a jazzified version of EDM’s rave stylings. Thanks to his live band, he was able to add fresh grace to a genre that is all about losing the notion of “elegance.” The EDM world is about joy, clarity, and the tripping nature of euphoria. Hence, sophistication is not exactly thought of, important, or necessary. All you need to do is let go, but STS’ rap stylings made you feel like you had a thread on earth.

RJD2 – 1976

STS is a poet, and his presence did elevate the night. Something about feeling the air and his verses made the nigh feel surreally fun and relaxing. I have said it before but Industry city, of all the concert series, feels like the “young crowd.” Whether young couples with no babies in sight or young friend groups that feel like “babies” in this life; such dynamics matter in building an ambiance where twenty-somethings have a voice and a vent. In perspective, the concert scene has become “our spot” to grab a drink, talk about work, and feel like we have gotten entertained. With its friendly prices, City Farm Presents, actually, does deliver one of the nicest settings for twenty-somethings to hang. This amplified how invested the crowd got at listening to RJD2 become a serenader of sorts. For More Information On City Farm Presents Click Here.
