Concert Review: The Beaches Lead Pier 17 Into Summer
Starting their summer series, Pier 17 felt like the perfect, open-air space to hold The Beaches. The Toronto quartet are as fresh, fun, joyous, and mischievous as the summer. I can honestly say some of my wildest times were under the sun and over the ocean and sand. With that in mind, these ladies encouraged wilder fun and reminded me of the Spice Girls.
Yes, I am on some 90’s nostalgia. Call Captain Marvel! Though The Beaches are a modern, “party pop rock group”, they gave me the classic, Spice Girls vibe because they appeared like fantastical, feminist superheroes. I kept on thinking of the Spice Girls barbies, stickers, and wardrobe I bought because those ladies represented fabulousness and fearlessness, of which The Beaches were, equally, limitless. Lead singer Jordan Miller was Ginger Spice; wearing a neglige and flirting lyrics towards the crowd. Kylie Miller was Scary Spice; roaring her guitar and pursing her lips with a lioness pride. Eliza Enman-McDaniel was Posh Spice on the mere fact that she wore shiniest shirt and bashed her drums like a Beckham. Lastly, Leandra Earl was Sporty; rocking a romper and zipping her keyboards like a soccer ball.
From singing to unwanted attention to confronting unnecessary exes, these ladies felt like party-bus soldiers; rallying everyone to have a good time and fighting any man who challenges it with their seediness. What woman would not want to be apart of such a force of strength, safety, and fun? Each young lady stood out in style and panache; tying their personalities to their presentation and appearing like sisters ready to take over the world, of which Kylie and Jordan are siblings. As each woman went from waltzing to rumbaing across the stage to ignite the audience’s inner fires, it was no wonder Jordan mentioned Game of Thrones. These ladies are a pack of Khaleesis.
