Concert Review: The Nightowls Turn Pianos Into Funkytown
You always hear that person who says, “Music is dead. It’s not the same!” Of course, that person is wrong, but I understand what he feels. Most of us think that music is repetitive bubble, but thanks to the internet, you can find an artist that takes you to the era you most desire. The Nightowls take you to Funkytown.
Yes, I said it; FUNKYTOWN. Playing at Pianos, I felt like I had hopped on The Magic School Bus, and taken a ride back to parties for Soul. In Pianos, cozy nook, the crowd was going in, and it did not matter if you had rhythm or not. The point is that if you did not move, then you looked bad. It was not about clapping on beat or even nodding in place; the ambiance commanded choreography, and it was a vision to witness. Not many times are you going to be asked by an atmosphere/ band to give your body to a moment, which is why giggles were abound but so was dance.
Led by Ryan Hardriker, this 10 piece group filled the stage, and gave their hearts to giving their audience a good time. As Ryan belted tracks like, “Nice And Slow” and “All The Good Things You Are,” he felt like a Master of Love Ceremonies (MLC); singing new songs for a classic sound. While he was hoping to bring some Southern Hospitality to the NYC crowd, he brought something more. From horns to drumrolls, life and love felt revived like, adding hot sauce to a vegetable soup. Before these 10 people got together, instruments felt plain, but then they became The Nightowls and life had a kick to it again.
I think what I like most about The Nightowls is that they like themselves. I know that sounds arrogant, but it was something I mentioned with Phoenix; whether you like an artist or not, there is something attractive to their self-respect and appreciation for their sound. The Nightowls are a PURE FUNK- SOUL band that belong in every jazz club made for a fun night. Thus, you better be ready to dance if you go see them. Click Here For More Information On The Nightowls.
