Concert Review: US Girls Turns Knockdown Center Into A Pop Disco
Do we grow? Do we change? This is a recurring question within humanity, but U. Girls HAS CHANGED! The first time I ever saw her, she seemed so lonely on the stage. She played her songs, by herself, as if she were constructing them before her crowd like a craft to be sold. Her dynamic was enrapturing because it felt unbelievably insular, but she has done a 180! At least, she did so for her Knockdown show.
US Girls’ last album, In A Poem Unlimited, was a complete game-changer and a bright display of how much she can modernize/ experimentally mash pop with a discotheque groove. She makes you feel like you are dancing under city lights; each lamp-post lighting at the sway of your hips. Thus, in perspective, it makes sense that her performance has heightened so much. While she has always sung for the lonely soul that looks at life through a window, she presented her songs like a spirit deciding it was time to see the world through its own eyes.
Imagine you have been seeing people pass you by through a window, and were left wondering. “Which of those persons were “my people”: the ones that I could rely on to bring texture and tenacity to the dreams I have only been able to share with myself?” With this mindset, U.S. Girls gleamed over her band like a proud mama watching her son kick every soccer goal. Every move and melody they made added a glisten and smirk to her face because she could just focus on her the crowd.
The audience was in an unspoken travel with US Girls, of which the dance-floor was a magic carpet ride transporting us through tracks like, “Navy & Cream, ”Window Shades,” and “Rosebud.” Throughout each song, US Girls wailed her notes and weaved her body to become a literal fabric of sound. If she previously played like a lonesome dove then, at Knockdown, that dove has flown and found her flock. Frankly, I was surprised how much more spiritual US Girls felt in presence and style, but there is nothing life “feeling” your rising success to make you elevate your confidence.
