Concert Review: Wolf Alice Leaves Us Howling To The Moon At Rough Trade NYC
I saw Wolf Alice about a year ago; opening for The 1975. While they rocked Barclays Arena, their Rough Trade NYC show fleshed out their rock n’ roll status through an intimate/ slight underground feel. While some artists thrive in arenas, others thrive in concert halls and more personal settings where they can elaborate the emotions behind the music. Seeing Wolf Alice again, up close, introduced me to the theatricality of Ellie Rowsell.
Wolf Alice – Don’t Delete The Kisses
Now, when I say theatricality I do not mean Rowsell is going to join a recast of Glee. I am talking about people whom are not just giving a show, but know how to become a show, as well. I had mentioned in my previous review that she radiated a strength and firmness in her voice and presence that made her seem immovable, and seeing that radiance more closely made it seem as if she was planting her soul into the stage, like a giant tree. You would have to rip her away what seems like her destiny: to perform. She would open her mouth like a lioness calling her cubs/ the crowd to come forward and prepare to hunt. “Don’t Deletes The Kisses”, “Yuk Foo”, and “ Fluffy” were like music middle fingers to every moment or person did not go your way because it/ he or she did not support you. Thus, as Rowsell goes forward into the audience rocketing her notes like she is tearing down walls of cruelty and division, the crowd jumped and even began to mosh. I was deeply surprised and moved to how time and space can amp your appreciation of a good artist. All of Wolf Alice, play into a pop anarchy; giving malleable tunes that can be blasted on the radio or in a riot attempting to rebel against those that say “No” to your life.
Wolf Alice – Yuk Foo (Lyric Video)
After this Rough Trade Show, It was hard not to want to make Rowsell a feminist icon, and ask her lead a charge Women’s Equality march. I see A LOT of musicians ,especially for rock n’ roll, and not everybody, if not anybody, can muster that roar of an aura quite like Rowsell. Thus, it is inevitable to see that her femininity proves being a woman is a human force to reckon. As each band member rolled and hit their instruments like cannonballs to a field, Wolf Alice proved that they are here for a long time, and , September, which is the release of their sophomore album, Visions Of Love, cannot come sooner.
