Album Review: JP Cooper Shows We Can Live Both In Pain And Love Through “Raised In Grey Skies”

It is a somber time in this world, which is why JP Cooper’s Raised Under Grey Skies is befitting in title and times. Cooper’s soul acoustics delves right into the spirit’s eagerness to shine through clouded days and situations. How to keep smiling through tears is a lesson I do not know how to achieve completely or consistently, but Cooper’s music certainly feels like a guide.

Patience, perseverance, and peace are the three most needed virtues for this time, and are essential to love, which may be why Cooper’s debut is all about coming to terms with them as necessities. From the patience to see through the darker paths to a lover or a dream “We Were Raised Under Grey Skies” or “She’s On My Mind”. For JP, how we carry pain is essential in how we carry love; a connection that I have not always had so clear until songs such as, “Change”, “The Only Reason”, and “Wait”. Cooper approaches the heart as if it is consistently torn and mended by its eagerness to never allow hurt outweigh its wonder, of which his voice displays like an ancient, marble statue within a glass case His vocals seem like a relic frozen in the most beautiful stone, and posed in a position of yearning. Hence, Raised In Grey Skies is a perfect reference to how we yearn for lighter ones, and must accept our role in making them light again. It is hard to believe one has control of their self during hard situations, but tracks such as “Momma’s Prayers with Stormzy (ft. Hannah V)”, “Beneath The Streetlights And The Moon”, and “September Song” are all examples that love prevails if you let it in your life/ heart. Moreover, have I explained that Cooper’s voice feels like a melody of gold in and of itself being poured upon a single guitar?
JP Cooper – September Song

JP Cooper has made one of the most promising debuts of the year. He fully proves he is a star, while advocating that he is also a human being, which should be tied together. Art is a material mirror of humanity’s spiritual essence, and Cooper reflects that if you make your essence pain then you cannot expect it to absorb and further love.
