Diandra Interviews Girl Wilde: Musically Healing Your Own Worst Enemy
From her first response to my interview, Girl Wilde felt highly relatable. Releasing her newest single, “Fake Louis,” she sings to all that you do to assure no one “judges” you; meanwhile, you are your own jury for every move you make in life. Sonically, especially in her new track, Girl Wilde feels like Alanis Morissette went through a pop factory, and came out with ironic, sardonic jams against inauthenticity. In a world, trying to be more “real,” Girl Wilde’s verses explain why it is become so hard to do so. How can you be clear about your reality, when the only thing you to do build it is either nitpick it or mold it to look like another’s life?
Diandra: You have discussed how songs, like Nervous Breakdown, are all about how you can hurt yourself more than others. What has music taught you about self-love and being wiser with whom you surround yourself?
Girl Wilde: I can be really mean to myself. Self love is something I’m always working on. I think a lot of my insecurities come from fear of judgement. The more I let go of that, the more I love myself.
Diandra: Your song-writing feels like someone seeking or etching self-clarity. How has music made you aware of who you are as a person, and what qualities has it revealed in you?
Girl Wilde: I struggled with my sense of self from the time I was a child to.. honestly.. a few months ago. Music, in general, always gave me a safe place. I learned that I feel a lot more than what is considered normal. My emotions come in extremes. I’ve learned I can channel those extremes and it makes it all a little more bearable.
Diandra: Your music can span through genres, but you never create with the idea of using one specifically. Do you feel you write your songs more according to your mood or emotions?
Girl Wide: Everything is based on how I’m feeling or what I’m going through. Sessions can be like therapy. I usually always end up crying (haha).
Diandra: With so much new music being released in 2019, what are you hopeful the new year brings you as a person and artist?
Girl Wilde: I hope to continue to connect with people.. at the end of the day the most important thing to me is connection. Intimacy inspires me. But on a personal level, I hope to improve my listening skills.
Diandra: Do you think there is a division between who you are and who you become as an artist/ Girl Wilde?
Girl Wide: This is the first time I can say I just am who I am. Girl Wilde wouldn’t exist if I wasn’t Alex Barnes.
Diandra: How do you feel music has molded your growth as a person?
Girl Wilde: I truly feel like I wouldn’t exist if I didn’t have music. I think back to every pivotal moment in my life and I can remember what I was obsessed with. Songs are powerful and there is nothing like falling in love with a new one.
Diandra: The music industry/ scene can be filled with highs and lows. As a rising, ambitious songstress, how do you use your determination as strength?
Girl Wilde: The highs and lows are brutal, and I used to let them consume me. Now I like to focus on the fact that I have chosen to share my music so I have to be able to roll with the punches.
Diandra: What are the details you can give on your upcoming music and their powerful messages?
Girl Wilde: My new song coming out, Fake Louis, is about the weight that is lifted once you stop living to please other people.
