Diandra Interviews Wave Break: Using Music As Your Armory
Wave Break are making their debut with new EP Armory. Fusing rock with the youthful zest and resilience of this generation, they fearlessly interconnect that the individual anxieties of persons stem from governmental policies. In a world that hates, it is not easy to avoid self-hatred. Yet, they are here to bring another sound of personal clarity.
Diandra: How does it feel to have your debut EP out there for listening ears?
Wave Break: It feels great! This EP has been a long time coming and we’re excited to finally have it out. It’s been in the works for about 1.5 years.
Diandra: What were the “ups and downs” in choosing a clear, set sound and themes for the record?
Wave Break: Choosing the sound and theme for the record kind of happened naturally. The only criteria for our sound that we had, initially, was to make it energetic. Once we all started playing together, the alt-rock flavored pop punk sound kinda just happened. The themes also were pretty natural – we had mentioned red in one of the songs so we thought making red the theme would be cool. Then the theme of overcoming adversity and self-doubts simply happened from writing about real world experiences. Nothing on this record was forced. So it is probably a perfect example of who we are as people at this moment.
Diandra: What do you hope upcoming live performance will elaborate about the record?
Wave Break: We’re hoping that the live performances will bring the energy of these songs to life. People will also see how raw these tracks really are; production was kept to a minimum, and as of now we don’t use backing tracks for our show, but it’ll sound almost identical to the record.
Diandra: What has music taught you about self-confidence, and which of your songs do you feel most speaks to this theme?
Wave Break: If music has taught us anything about self-confidence, it’s that it’s internally fueled. If you’re waiting for other people to validate you and give you your self-confidence, you’re never going to find it. You need to learn how to love yourself and be your own number one fan. Circles most accurately paints this picture; it’s about making the internal decision to go after what you want at any and all costs, and to remain positive about the outcome. It’s about acknowledging that you can do anything, and with a simple change in course, you’ll get where you want to be.
Diandra: It is never easy to go after what you want. When did you decide that music was your only path, and how have you kept determination, love, and hope for this path alive?
Wave Break: We all decided at young ages that this was what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives and have since been trying to make it a reality. By listening to our favorite bands and musicians everyday and seeing the growth in what we’re creating we stay inspired and determined. We’re always hopeful that the next phase of our growth will trigger something bigger in our careers.
Diandra: You use your music to confront socio-political subjects. What subjects do you believe are most damaging or depressing to the youth of today?
Wave Break: Where do we begin, there’s so much. Discrimination, the current government uprooting all the positive social change that has been done in recent years, and the current state of the economy and lack of high-paying jobs or affordable healthcare. Deadlock touches on this a bit, and goes as far as to say that those who are running for office don’t actually care for us, and are just running for their own personal gain.
Diandra: What inspired your name Wave Break, and how has it grown in meaning as you progress as a band?
Wave Break: Wave Break came from us randomly throwing around words and phrases for a few weeks to try to come up with something. It was the first one that was suggested that really stuck because it was memorable and had meaning to us in terms of overcoming adversity and self doubts. Since starting the band, we’ve all gone through some personal situations that have thrown us for a loop and our band name continues to serve as a reminder even to us that we can get through it.
