Festival Review: Fool’s Gold Day Off 2019 Was A Blast At Knockdown

The move to Knockdown Center has been SO good for Fool’s Gold Day- Off. This art gallery/ warehouse is massive and even with a huge crowd, there was a feeling that, if I had to bust a move, the room would make space. Of all the festivals I have been to, Fool’s Gold Day Off is one of my favorites because its combination of Hip Hop and Electronica leads to some AMAZING danceoffs. Yes, it was about the music, but it also became about the people it summoned.

Honestly, if Vogue came to Fool’s Gold, they would see the “creme de la creme” of urban-wear, and get a heads up on the best, current dance moves dominating the floor. I love going to events where A) people actually go into full-on choreography B) I love Hip Hop and its combo with EDM is splendid. One is a revolutionary culture while the other is rave. So….it was bound to be good. YBN Nahmir, I have seen him a few times, and he is sweet, humble, and entered the party/ fest like he was there to meet people, moreso than perform. Yet, that quality of chill connection dominates every performance in Fool’s Gold Day Off.

Fool’s Gold DAY OFF ’19 New York [Teaser]

From the exceptional, Kemba, (I AM A MAJOR SUPPORTER) to Black Thought dropping verses like Biblical wisdom,, FGDF has a way of reintroducing you to even the most known artist, in part, because everything flows so perfectly. There was an easy “funness” to Fool’s Gold Day Off that welcomed everyone: from old to even then non-rhythmic. I, definitely, saw an old couple roaming and busting a move to Chris Crack, which was to my absolute glee.  Fool’s Gold Day-Off had just enough artists, both classic and new, to feel like it was a fulfilling time without being bombarding. It was just one stage with DJs, like A-Trak and Electric Punanny, in-between performances, which allowed people to breathe in a way. Moreover, in using the whole space, they had fantastic food, good drinks, and differing corners, like a section of hammocks, that allowed people to rest under a cool shade. The whole event felt cool.

Herzeloyde – Dream Type

Every artist treated the event like a a party amongst friends; rolling into the crowd acknowledging that, as fans, we are the artist’s equal. From Tiskakorean giving me such a good pic and befriending the crowd in verse and swag to Tabby Wakes introducing songs from debut EP, Over Night, FGDO was a place to show you those on the rise and risen in Hip Hop. It fuses this powerful genre with every other music possible, which made it a culture event inviting even Latinx to dance to some Spanish Hip Hop. It was the essence of fun.
