House of Vans Hosts A Night of Auditions For Schoolboy Q
House of Vans hosted another stellar event, but this time it was for the people. Getting ready for a show in Chicago, on September 14, Schoolboy Q auditioned NYC acts at the House of Vans in Brooklyn. The night of Hip Hop was surprisingly intimate with a few flexing their rap skills and their attention to cultural detail. Act after act, arose to show they knew what was needed to provide what the people wanted from Hip Hop.
It is kind of crazy to see how finessed new artists are. Now more than ever, new artists have a wealth of resources to create an album or tracks that could easily be placed on a label or radio. They even had easily visible rap names like, Little Baby Duplex, and danced to their heavy baselines as if they were Migos at MSG. It was moving to see how polished they were in music presentation; many having goals and visions for their careers without a manager, publicist, or even a Facebook page. The night was a testament to pure ambition, but it also gave me another epiphany. In a small room, with the some free beer and pizza and deep red lighting, I realized House of Vans is an exceptional space of “spaces”.

That little nook/ side room, from which they held the auditions, showed House of Vans could easily compete with Mercury Lounge or Market Hotel. Moreover, they have a solid fanbase. Skaters rolled in and out like the Kings and Queens of counter-culture. The night was electric, not just with Hip Hop, but athleticism and cool chatter. Teens and twenty-somethings shuffled between the rink, outdoor space, and the small, concert lounge as if House of Vans NYC was their home. For a spot, that is selective on its special events, House of Vans could be one of the premier, competing concert halls. You just cannot beat a a space that feels rebellious matched with genres, like Hip Hop, that have sparked rebellions. Unfortunately, with all these compliments, 2018 is House of Vans BK’s final year.
