Diandra Interviews Dasha: The Empowering Art of Not Giving A F*ck
Dasha is unabashed in her desire to empower herself and women, of which most will praise but some men will feel threatened by this initiative. Yet, for Dasha, you need to empower the side of you that is most attacked or vulnerable so that every side of you can reach its full power. Think of it this way! If you break your arm, you do everything you can, from surgery to physical therapy, to repair it so as to have a fully functioning body. People have tried to make her “womanhood” her broken arm, and, in our interview, she discusses how music became her body or rather power against them.
Diandra: How would you define “Girl Power,” and who are the women who taught you it?
Dasha: “Girl Power” is all about confidence and knowing your self worth. My mom and Grandma have always illustrated these qualities to my sister and I. If you want something, and know you deserve it, go (f**king) get it.

Diandra: When you think of womanhood and female empowerment, what do you feel makes you strong as a woman/ person and how do you feel it shows in your music?
Dasha: I’ve definitely embraced the “bad ass” feeling through a lot of my music. Everything’s much more fun when you’re confident in who you are. Being in the music industry, as a woman, totally has its ups and downs and can be a power struggle to even maintain control over your career creatively. Within my team, I have final say over everything related to my music. They’re amazing. This is how it should be with all artists, especially women who tend to get pushed out of the way. Stay in control of your own life and those who don’t agree with this shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near you.
Diandra: With your songs on heartbreak, what did it teach you about love and yourself?
Dasha: I haven’t experienced that totally anticipated “heartbreak” yet- I’m only twenty. But I have learned that whoever you’re interested in, if they aren’t giving you the same energy that you’re giving to them, move the (fuck) on. It’s not worth it. Walking away and knowing exactly what you deserve is sexy.
Describe your first crush, and what you did to show the person you like them. What do you define as romantic or signs of real love?
Dasha: Oh boy you see.. I used to kiss boys on the playground in Kindergarten when I got bored. But I guess my first real real crush was on a guy who I actually ended up having my first kiss with, years later, in middle school. We were obsessed with rain and the color grey, so whenever we’d be coloring in class he’d give me the grey markers and I’d pass him notes with pictures of rain on them. He’s still one of my closest guy friends. I don’t think I’ve ever been in love before. But I think a sign of real love is when you feel like you’re genuinely yourself around them and they make you want to be a better person.
Diandra: “None of My Business” is all about showing your rejector the good he rejected. What are your favorite 4 qualities about yourself as a person that you say, “Anyone would be lucky to be loved by me?”
Dasha: Ooh great question! I’d say I’m pretty empathetic, charismatic, driven, and yes, I’ll self proclaim that I think I’m pretty damn funny or, at least, entertaining most of the time.

Diandra: You got your first label deal through a “song and artist competition.” What are the details about that day that always make you smile in its simplicity compared to how much it changed your life?
Dasha: I won my last label deal with SONY Germany through a song competition in Nashville. I remember submitting one of my demos I did with Inverness, Pink Slip, and Bardo literally minutes before the deadline, with literally no expectations. One night, I came back from a hip hop class, checked my email, and saw that I made it to the next round of in person interviews. A few days laters, I got an email saying that I had won. I thought I was dreaming. It didn’t feel real. That deal led to some really great connections overseas and my first Spotify Editorial placement! I’ll always be very grateful for that chapter of my life even though I’m with a whole new label and team now.
Diandra; What is a movie you believe would be a great concept album and an album you think would become a great movie? Why did you pick them?
Dasha: Damn these questions are good. Let’s see…..I think Lady Bird would make such a wonderful coming of age, women empowerment and love story themed album. Greta Gerwig is a genius. I was listening to Mama’s Boy by LANY yesterday, and there’s a lot of great concepts in that album that would make a really beautiful and relatable visual piece.
Diandra: The 90s are an inspiration to your music style. What are the 90’s tracks that for you speak to love, heartbreak, and fierce women?
Dasha: The whole mood and aesthetic of the 90’s is what really inspires me. It’s more the attitude and feeling of women being in power that is seen not only in my music but the way I dress and choose to show up across all my platforms.
Diandra: With your songs being about self-love and motivation, awhat are the things you do, beyond music, to keep you up and self-cared?
Dasha: I eat well, pesca-vegan-ish (she laughs) and work out a healthy amount. I also keep a gratitude journal ,which is a constant reminder of how blessed I am and definitely keeps me grateful for the little things. I also take time to do what makes me happy, totally unrelated to music. It gives my right brain a second to recharge.
Diandra: What is a book or tv show you would recommend to people to teach compassion and/resilience? Why?
Dasha: The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck- Read it! Trust me! Also Steal Like An Artist is one of my most favorite books to change your perspective about anything creative.
Dasha – Rocket Science (Live Studio Version)
Diandra: What is your favorite family memory with music?
Dasha: My brother and I went to this mini-songwriting boot camp when I was twelve or thirteen and there was this industry professional there who heard our songs and was absolutely blown away. “With songs like that at your age, you’re going to be famous”. I remember in the car ride back home Bardo and I were freaking out like. “OMG WE’RE GONNA BE FAMOUS!!!: It was such a pure moment of genuine passion and excitement. Being “famous” is not what music is about to either of us, but, at that age, it was pretty exciting when someone else already successful tells you so. I have no idea if Bardo even remembers this day but it replays in my mind all the time.
Diandra: What can we expect in your future music, and what do you feel it will further say about your personality and life perspectives?
Dasha: My music will naturally develop along with me as a human. I already see the next wave of music coming through in my recent songwriting. Literally cannot wait to share it. It’s very honest and raw. The songs I write about my own life make me very vulnerable but that’s exactly how I want it to feel.
