Diandra Interviews Falcon: Feeling Nova
There is no hiding it; artist put themselves in their music. They put their dreams, fantasies, hopes, heartbreaks, tragedies, and overall experiences to not only assess what they have been through, but hope they convey themselves powerfully enough for you to feel like you have been through the same. I have yet to meet the artist whose goal was NOT to make their life experience a common-ground with listeners and thus a launchpad to their legend. With her debut, Nova, Falcon launches and, in our interview, she discusses how joy and sadness of finding yourself amidst the people that choose to love you versus the ones that don’t
Diandra: What does a falcon represent to you?
Falcon: It represents a bright new canvas, fun, and a family name.
Diandra: If you were a superhero character, how would the new album, Nova, be like your origin story? What superpowers and messages would we find?
Falcon: Maybe, we would find a kind of superpower sadness: if there is such a thing. A bright sadness. A struggle to understand or tame it and a journey to accept it. Maybe, a journey through the valley of acceptance to a bright expanse on the other side, that moves her from isolation to empathy and community.
Falcon – The Good Stuff (Official Music Video)
Diandra: What is the “good stuff” you have found in life and relationships that always leaves you wanting more?
Falcon: Hmm…. The joy of being known and found. I love to be found. I love long term friendships, the ones I can reminisce with. I love having shared experiences, adventures. Also, laughter. A lot of laughter. I can live without a lot of things, laughter is not one of them.
6. Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?
Falcon: I loved listening to records in the winter. My Dad has a great collection of vinyl, and I would roam around the house, humming along to whatever was playing, getting completely absorbed into the music. I loved learning how to communicate through melodies, and sitting at the piano to figure out what the themes were.
Falcon – Young Love (Official Music Video)
Diandra: What was the first fear or flaw music helped you confront and heal?
Falcon: Music gave me language for my emotions: for my soul. I still get stuck in my head so often, and music is the thing that helps me return to earth…it grounds me. It heals me. It tells me the truth. My piano seems to know me better than I know me. It gives me a way of expressing it so I don’t stay trapped in my thoughts.
Diandra: Nova signifies new. What new things did you discover about yourself through this record?
Falcon: I discovered newness in the small, ordinary things, as well as the big imaginary things. I started noticing every day miracles in the madness, flowers that still bloom in the middle of the street whether or not we like it or approve or disapprove of them. The sun still rising whether or not I witnessed it. I learned to keep offering a radical kindness like the sun or a flower to the rough edges of myself when she is having a hard time accepting it.
Falcon – I’ll Admit It (Official Lyric Video)
Diandra: Music often sings to relationships. What is one song of yours, on the upcoming album, that you feel sings a universal truth about love? What is that truth?
Falcon: Not all stories last forever, but they all matter. “You Me and Us” is my favorite exploration of that idea. It includes the beauty and the broken bits. The happy memories and grief – everything belongs.
