Diandra Interviews Lisa Remar: Music As An Escape

Lisa Remar is my spiritual twin. This is a fact I discovered in our interview. Her love of Mariah Carey was so powerful, I thought we both might become butterflies (Mariah’s fave). In our interview, Lisa Remar discusses how her music is an escape from people by, in some ways, analyzing who they are.

Diandra: What has being in love taught you about yourself versus heartbreak?

Lisa Remar: What a loaded question! Haha – I love it!  Hmm….well…. I’d like to think that I’ve been in love twice. My first experience ended quite chaotically – the end really felt like a fever dream. It was truly the most intense whirlwind of emotions – whereas my second, came to a bittersweet, open-ended, sorta-romantic bookend. Love has always been a proponent for self growth. Personally, it’s helped me gain confidence, patience, and gratitude. Heartbreak, on the other hand, I’m honestly sick of it. I probably experience heartbreak every other day, and, yes, I’ve learned coping mechanisms, but I think I’m over it for now.

Diandra: What is one song of yours that sings to your favorite love story or aspect of love?

Lisa Remar: My songs usually don’t derive from one event. Each song, I’d say, is a combo of a bunch of small stories that have a common thread. But when people ask me about the origin story of a specific song I usually run with the most memorable vignette or the funniest one depending on how I’m feeling in that moment I suppose.

Diandra: What are 3 things you hope people love about you versus what you usually love about them?

Lisa Remar: I find that hoping for others to see a certain quality of mine is stressful. I’d like to approach relationships and encounters with very little expectation. I like a good sense of humor, really funny people tend to be the smartest as well I think.

Diandra: What is one movie or tv show you would love to turn into a concept album? Why and who would you cast as the lead?

Lisa Remar: I draw aesthetic inspirations from NYC in the 80’s-90’s as well as East Asian films from that era and films from the early 2000s. I just rewatched the movie TAXI last night with Queen Latifah. It was one of my favorite movies to watch growing up. It’s a vibe for sure. Queen Latifah will be the lead obviously.

Diandra: What is your favorite album that you would turn into a movie or series? Why and what would be the premise?

Lisa Remar: Mariah Carey: The Musical – all of her albums are my favorites so it would be like Across the Universe, but, instead of the Beatles, it will be Mariah Carey and it will be the greatest thing to ever happen.

Diandra: When you think of your style, how would you describe your personality/ essence and recurring themes in your music?

Lisa Remar: I would say the only solid common thread between all my songs is how the music is mixed and my voice – besides that my discography doesn’t really stay put in one place as far as genre goes…. I think. I just call my songs that are out now, sad girl music. Although, Halfway To Nowhere is rather inspirational for some people I’ve heard.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music? What is your favorite childhood toy and what song would you dedicate to it?

Lisa Remar: I think performing Alicia Keys in front of my entire school when I was like 9 years old – it felt very rewarding and validating. Childhood toy? Hmm ….I was obsessed with throwing random foods into a blender and just like blending things, it was weirdly my favorite pastime haha.

Diandra: Describe your first crush and which song of the EP most describes that feeling?

Lisa Remar: Oof! I wish I could remember what that felt like – Nonetheless, I can assure none of these songs allude to what I’m assuming was a giddy warm feeling. All of my songs from my upcoming EP are directionally riding towards a different emotion and don’t have a lot to do with romantic relationships.

Diandra: If you could get back one thing from the past what would it be and what is one thing you would want to take into the future from now?

Lisa Remar: I used to bleach my hair platinum and one time I burned almost all of my baby hairs off. They grew back super thin and sparse so I would like my baby hairs back. The future from now is literally every leading moment so I actually have no idea. My phone?

Diandra: If you could describe your bond with music, would it be of a lover, best friend, or parent-child? Why and what would be your perfect day with Music if it was an actual person?

Lisa Remar: I actually turn to music usually when I’m feeling sick of being around people.

Diandra: What has music taught you to accept about life?

Lisa Remar: That there will be no one greater than Mariah Carey.
