Diandra Interviews Malachi: Becoming A Bread Winner Through Music

After listening to his newest mixtape, Bread Winner, I was incredibly excited to interview Malachi. He has such a bright future in music, especially R & B. The Toronto native understands hows to croon and steam his voice as is love is something you cook up. Yet, his songs are not solely about loving another. They are about loving the hustle, the end-games, the goals, the emotional rides, and material dreams that define life. There is nothing wrong with loving body and soul, but, as seen when interviewing Malachi, it is about the richness of such a connection.

Diandra: You started performing when your grandmother put you in the church gospel choir by age 4. How did performing in a church influence you as a performer at a concert? What is one thing you find in common between both spaces?

Malachi: My grandma, Audrey’s church choir taught me to read people’s vibes and energies as a performer. I find that being a performer as well as being in a church choir environment, everyone sings along or dances to the music.

Diandra: You have opened at a lot of college campuses. What has performing in front of a university crowd taught you about how youth, today, consume live music?

Malachi: College Students today are the like the judge and jury of what’s hot and what’s not in general, So for me, it was essential to do more than my best while performing at every college. I’m just glad they enjoyed having me. It let’s me know I’m doing something right.

Me: AMEN TO THAT STATEMENT!

Diandra: With your mixtape being released, what were the messages and overall aspects of your personality you wished for it to convey?

Malachi: I want everyone to see the confidence; believing in my craft and aiming to be the best in every arena of the music biz. I’m the Bread Winner for my family now.

Diandra: What was the inspiration behind the title Bread Winner?

Malachi: It just represents the energy of where the city’s at right now. The whole recording process just happened to be during the post season for The Raptors. You know! Track with vocals then jump out of the booth to check the score. It was a great moment for everyone involved in the process. I thank them all for the inspiration. The arrogance in believing in something before everyone else does; it’s beautiful.

Diandra: How do you feel the bread winners in your family influenced the album and your path into music?

Malachi: I grew up around some real bread winners my whole life. I’ve always been blessed, and for that I’m so grateful. My Grandparents on my moms side are both doctors, my mother (Kim) is a lawyer, my uncles a police officer & my aunty Kelly is a nurse. So financial stability was never a concern for my family. With that being said, I’m the only one in my family doing music. So it was actually a pretty big elephant in the room, for a while, when I dropped out of college to fully pursue music.
I Feel Better
Diandra: R&B is about love and desire. Name a few artists that, through their music, taught you what these terms mean and how so?

Malachi: To me, R&B can also be very much about passion and pain, both two very crucial elements that make up who I am in the industry. Someone such as Drake for example, emphasizes on the pain and negativity of love and we now see how relatable it is to everyone. Bryson Tiller is another artist who is great at explaining these feelings. Even Future made love such a negativity inspirational thing that it helps you second guess relationships and really taking your time to find yourself before finding anyone. I think it’s because everyone has been hurt, not everyone has experienced true and honest love. I know I haven’t.

Diandra: Now 21, how do you define romance and relationships versus how you hope to define them in the future?

Malachi: I actually don’t believe love exists for most people my age. In my opinion, romance and relationships are overrated at this age. I do hope to find someone I can truly relate to in all things but ,as of right now, it’s a stretch for me and I’m okay with that.

Diandra: Being placed on so many “ones to watch” lists, what do you think makes you “one to watch”?

Malachi: My versatility and my vocal tone is what differentiates me. The range I have is something I keep close and only let it out for the special ladies in my life, or when it feels right in a song I’m going to release.

MALACHI – I Got You

Diandra: Being a fan of the comic and anime world, if you could describe yourself as a music superhero, with superpowers and an origin story, how would you?

Malachi: If I was a comic/anime character I’d relate to Vegeta from Dragonball Z the most. I always have a chip on my shoulder. I’m countlessly working to be one of the best and I won’t let anything stand in my way.

Diandra: If you were a Pokemon, which would you be and why?
Malachi:
Mewtwo because he has demons he fights in his head and so do I.

I really like Malachi’s interview. He is smart, confident, and has lot more to grow, which makes him exciting to watch. His new EP, Breadwinner, is such a powerful step-up for him, with nearly every song feeling like Top 10 on the charts. He knows how to make a hit, is determined to give memorable performances, and will not be stopped. Such a dynamic reflects in Breadwinner’s lyrics and sound; hanging invincibility like a lucky charm on every bassline and spun verse. For More Information On Malachi Click Here.
