Diandra Interviews Potty Mouth: Overcoming Any Music “Snafu”

Potty Mouth are punk-pop glory and they are coming to Trans-Pecos on July 6. Happily, I got the chance to interview drummer Victoria on their newest record, Snafu, and explore how their journey through the industry has taught them not to change. If you love being and creating music, then you can conquer any “snafu” comic-book levels of colorfulness.

Diandra: Describe a Snafu in your life that had to do with music.

Victoria: I play drums and sing most of the backups. For a while, I decided that it’d also be a good idea to chew gum at the same time.  Once ,when I was singing during a set my hair got into my mouth stuck onto the gum. I spit out the gum but then my drumstick got stuck on that!! There really wasn’t anything I could do about it because I had to keep playing, so I picked up a spare stick and finished the rest of the song with gum and a drumstick dangling off of me.

Diandra: How has the process of creating this album taught you about the highs and lows of being a professional creative?

Victoria: It’s taught us to not let anyone’s grubby little fingers muck up our stuff! How do you keep hope, love, and peace within yourselves for music when the industry can feel like a labyrinth to figure?  People will always have an opinion about you and what you should do, but they don’t actually know what it is to be in your shoes. It’s really important to remember to trust yourself and your instincts.

Diandra: You have described this album as a “new beginning” for the band. How  do things feel different, now, with the band, and how do you hope they will differ in the future?

Victoria: Our sound has definitely evolved but things don’t necessarily feel super different. In this industry, everything is always changing. At the end of the day the game is about staying on your toes.

Diandra: What are qualities you think describes each member of the group, and a song that is most like them?

Victoria: Ally is the curious one, Abby is the silly one, and I am the quiet one, which is why I’m in charge of answering this interview. If Ally were a song it would be “She’s So High” by Tal Bachman. Abby is “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley, and I am “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith.

Diandra: You are labeled as a “pop-punk” band. How do you fit this label? Describe pop and describe punk.

Victoria: We’re a “pop” band in that we write catchy songs that we hope people will want to sing along to, and we’re a “punk” band in that we do it in a rock formation with loud, heavy guitars and a lot of energy. We love to rock!!!

Diandra: You have a comic-book. How do you feel comics match and embody Potty Mouth, and if you could be a superhero, which would you be?

Victoria: If I were a superhero I would be Mrs. Claus. Comic books make sense with Potty Mouth because we’re colorful, playful, and also have a lot going on underneath the surface!

Diandra: Name a song of yours the revealed a part of yourself/ situation  that you had not realized. Describe.

Victoria: “Dog Song” was one of the first songs Abby ever wrote when she was 17 and had just picked up a guitar. It sounds just as good to me today as it did back then. To me, this is more than enough evidence that you don’t need an expensive guitar or fancy pedals to make something cool. If you’ve always wanted to play music but never have, the barriers to entry are lower now than they ever have been. If you can get your hands on a guitar or drumsticks, or really any instrument, there are loads of resources available online for those looking to learn.
