Diandra Interviews Rose Dorn: A Band of Actual Friends

I got to interview the lead singer of one of my fave new artists, Rose Dorn. Scarlet Knight is like many artists that take the pen to paper and make dreams in to melodies. She is smart, shy, and and open to to letting her emotions staple unto images like, in their debut, Days You Were Leaving. Hence, in our interview it felt natural to dive into the meaning of friendship and fantasize the mystical origins of Rose Dorn.

Diandra: How would you define friendship?

Scarlet: I feel like friendship, in itself, is love and a bond that you can openly express, but its not, exactly, like family. They are your second family. You can be and learn more about yourself from them. They are special to us in others way like, the family you choose.

Diandra: What do you feel they have taught you about yourself?

Scarlet: A lot of things! Jamie and Joey are older than me and were able to teach me a lot about the world like, older figures. I never thought that there would be two people that would like the weird things I like. People who have my common interests like, going to the mall and seeing and anime film. They like my music and think the same things I think are funny. I never knew they were out there.

Diandra: Would you say then that going from an outcast to finding “your people” is a theme in the album?

Scarlet: Yeah, I would say it is a theme; being inclusive, and the feeling of safety and love and finding affection. It is about not being an outcast, and knowing that there is a friendship out there that exists for you and it is strong. Big Thunder

Diandra: Was there a moment you knew they were your friends and then your bandmates?

Scarlet: Yeah, definitely! I think it was when we were practicing and making music in my garage. We taking it seriously and hanging out more. It felt special and fun. I can’t really describe it, but it was like listening and making these songs and knowing this is special. Being in a band  and having a special friendship is a rare thing. I found out, later, that a lot of bands are not as close or actual friends like we are.

Diandra: How do you feel your music and friendship has helped you protect the best of life?

Scarlet: I’m doing what I want to do with these great people so it is such a good life and feeling.

Diandra: Was there a song, in particular, that helped you feel clearer?

Scarlet: I would say “Big Thunder.” It is one of those songs that creates a story, and reminds me that I have Joey and Jamie as best friends. We really are all on the same page.

Diandra: The record is all about new beginnings and ends. What did making these songs teach you about starts and finishes?

Scarlet: It taught me endings are not really there. Opportunities and new things are constantly coming up, and having that mindset of “everything ends” is not helpful. This album creates a small conversation on how everything is changing.

Diandra: How would you describe Rose Dorn as a person>

Scarlet: She’s awkward, but sweet and confused. She is not what she wants to be, and has this awkward sense of self that makes her feel small, but she is really sweet and filled with devotion.

Diandra: What is her origin story?

Scarlet: I feel like she was born on sunrise, and, maybe, was born in May.

Diandra: She’s a gemini!

Scarlet: She’s a Taurus! (she giggles). Early May! She likes animals and has a pet bird that ran away.

Diandra: I feel like she would be born on the only day it snowed in LA.

Scarlet: Totally! It was this really crazy day and it is was magical, and her parents always talk about how it snowed on her birthday. And she tried out for sport, but never made it. So she didn’t do sports. This is getting really personal (she dies laughing).

Diandra: This has to be a song! Like you have to do it!

Scarlet: Yeah, I’m getting excited. I’m actually going to write this.

Diandra: Feel free to shout me out when you do!
