Diandra Interviews Tu Otra Bonita: Your Music Records Your Life
I am a firm believer that, no matter what, a little bit of you falls into your work. Even if you were wiring a fantasy song, book, or film, the choices you make, especially in morals, does reflect you. Tu Otra Bonita have grown a lot as musicians, and, in our interview, discuss how their new album, ¿Verdad o atrevimiento?, wraps up how far they have come.
Diandra: How do you feel you have evolved as artist through time?
Felix: If you listen to our first record, it will be vastly different from our newest one. As a person and musician you start learning. You start facing more obstacles and seeing this go to s**t.Those moments, obviously, affect the music because they affect you.
Diandra: In hearing your own music, do you ever have moments when you are impressed or impacted by your growth?
Hector: Yeah, of course! In the end, evolution and listening to old themes and styles are impacting. I think our newest record is the most professional. The sounds is great, we had great technicians, and we felt like we were at our most complex and clear as a band. Our first album, was 4 guys playing acoustics. Naturally, we have grown and are doing more as a sound. We feel more interpretive or like we are interpreting more what we want.

Diandra: When you look back, do you feel empathy towards who you were?
Felix: Totally! When you look back at who you were and see so many people relate to who you were and your experiences, you gain empathy. Even if you are not that person anymore, somebody is still like who you were. So you hold a level of compassion for them and “you.”
Hector: When I listen to songs of ten years ago, I am always moved by what has been my life and what has been the journey of this band. It is inevitable that music picks up the changes in your personality, and you can hear that through our albums.
Diandra: Hearing your own journey, what has music taught you about yourself?
Hector: It has taught us that it is okay to be strong and to be weak. It permits you to be vulnerable because it is our passion. Your passion moves you to move through yourself. We have chosen a really beautiful life and it is wonderful to see people sing our songs. Yet, music is a job and you have to be strong to work in and for it. The lead up to that point, where everyone is singing your song, is process. You have to sit down and write your failures and triumphs; that is not easy.
Diandra: Do you think, at this moment, in your career it is easier or you are bolder?
Felix: I think we have gotten used to it. You know this life is a journey. You build your career step by step, and, as Hector mentioned, it is a process that you learn to get comfortable with. You get used to fighting for what you want so, in that sense, it becomes easier. So we don’t really get scared, but we still get nervous. Yet, I think it is good to get nervous still. You want to feel those jitters. It keeps an innocent, very beautiful feeling within you as you realize you are about to perform for thousands and they are going to sing your music.
Hector: The experience of bein a musician is wonderful, and I am so grateful. It is an experience not many can have, and I have always loved and wanted it since childhood.

Diandra: Do you feel your passion for music has grown in time?
Hector: Yeah! I think when you do something for your livelihood, and you do it consistently and with importance you lose fear and gain a respect/ love for it.
Felix: When you are convinced that you are doing good and that this is ”your art” then you put more passion to it. You are willing to become more passionate about it because, again, you have convinced yourself that this is your path.
Hector: You have to live and walk your path without fear.
Diandra: So what is a truth about love and passion that music has taught you?
Felix: I think more songs are about heartbreak. So I feel like I have learned more about that.
Hector: I think my life stories are not only in my songs. I have learned about love everywhere. Although, if I had to say I learned anything through my music, it is how to win over the ladies. (they laugh). It is funny! This man, randomly, wrote to us about how he uses our music to seduce women and how we have great songs to conquer ladies, and it was weird. We were like, “Okaaayyy….” You know like,”Greeeaaatt….. Use it as you will.” (they laugh)

Diandra: Beyond verses, do you feel the rhythm itself holds messages and lessons?
Hector: Most definitely! I have always said that a guitar can talk. It doesn’t just play, it conveys. Even without lyrics, as you play, you can swear it is telling you something like, a form of speech without words.
