Northside Fest Artist Fest Close-Up: Latasha Is A Hidden Rap Queen
There are times when you see someone perform, and swear they NEED to be big. It is not whether or not they can as much as they should. I am sure we all have an artist that we wish they all the fame for all the glory they gave us in song. Latasha has the rap style and swag that can boom her through mass appeal, the question is: is the industry ready?
From her weight to her looks, from shootouts to gentrification, from cheating boyfriends to being Afro-Latina, Latasha covered it all. The incredibly talented songstress has struggled to find a label that sees she is MASSIVELY TALENTED but also APPEALING. The Brooklyn crowd was enamored by her dance, stories, and capacity to spit rhymes like she was the third member of Salt N Pepa…. Sriracha. Yes, I made a bad pun joke, but, in all seriousness, the command and flow of Latasha drew me back to the olden days of Queen Latifah, but her capacity to connect with the crowd was pure and reminded me of hanging out with my girls.
There was this accessible regality to Latasha’s style that never waned; even when she was doing the “Doo Doo Brown”. Yes, she was dancing to 2000’s/ 1990’s dance music that made me want to Fresh Prince throughout the night. Her rhythms were infectiously rhythmic blended in with verses of the horrors and hopefulness of being a half-black, half-Puerto Rican woman in today’s world, and putting all your eggs in the basket of a dream that many carry: to be a Hip Hop Legend. We all suffer, but when you are trying to live your best/ happiest life, you, probably, will suffer more. It is an unfortunate truth that Latasha displays through some gut-wrenching tales and lyrics that drape over dancehall sound systems.Keep persevering, Latasha!
