Album Review: Phoebe Ryan Shows We Have All Dated A “James”
Phoebe Ryan’s James is conceptually delicious. This five track EP is like a sweet mourning to a relationship past with, you guessed it, James. Ryan transforms this enigmatic figure into the universal emblem for every break-up we never fully understood. I think it is safe to say; we have all had a James in life.
Phoebe Ryan – Forgetting All About You ft. Blackbear
From “Should I” to “Forgetting (Feat Blackbear)” you journey with Ryan as she tries to figure out why a smooth riding relationship has suddenly become a slow motion car crash. James has built a wall and speedily gassed the relationship’s car straight for it. The idea is perfect, relatable, and a nuanced enough approach to break-ups to feel fresh on the pop scene. Ryan has been blessed with a voice that drips like caramel, and sweetly thickens lyrics that are simple in catch but meaningful in purpose. After all, James is universal in theme. When a partner suddenly transforms his person, he puts a spiritual timer on your love as seen in, “Aspirin” and “Be Real”. Moreover, sonically, each song feels like a K-POP gem. Its instrumentals/ digitized beats share the colorful electricity of this genre, which makes even like, “James Has Changed” feel like a wall of neon lights flashing emotions and bubblegum.
Phoebe Ryan – James Has Changed (The Layman Drug Sessions)
Phoebe Ryan is 100% setting herself up as a “pop kween”. She grasps that pop music is all about sounding sweet, but embracing the bitter of life. No one wants their partner to become a “shadow” version of himself and then leave. Yet, if pop music and Phoebe Ryan’s James Has Changed can do one thing; its turn such sour moments into music candy.
