Artists of 2020: Bel Is Better Than Me
UGH! Something about a partner leaving us or treating us as if he or she has someone better is absolutely crushing. When you love someone, it sucks to know they are measuring your love in terms of “better” while you are thinking in terms of “more,” but, perhaps, they are right to do so. We all need someone to love us better because more is not quantifiable in terms of our needs. Bel is coming through with her new track, “Better Than Me” to make EVERYONE see she is better than them or, at least, the best one to be loved.
From sound to visuals, the first thing I KNEW would make people OBSESSED with BEL is her melodrama. She has an aesthetic that feels ripped from Greta Garbo’s Old Hollywood diaries but a bassline that drops like New Hollywood readying to rave. Her ability to give listeners a feeling of old and new blends elegance with escapism; matching current youths’ vibes of vulnerability and invincibility. We love an instagram pic with 20 million filters and a puffed up lip while putting a Buddha quote under it that promotes sincerity. YOU HAVE TO LOVE US! In some ways, BEL appeals to that emotional dichotomy with a sound that is splashy and flashy but a voice that is commanding and pensive.

“Better Than Me’” proves Bel has the potential to enter a space I like to call, “Regal Pop.” It is the domain where the likes of Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Rosalia, Billie Eilish, Rihanna, FKA Twigs, Ariana Grande, and Beyonce live; women that give off a sense of distinct queenliness while sounding and looking unlike anyone else. They start trends, and that is a FANTASTIC quality to have when entering the pop-sphere. Nowadays, a pop artist cannot just be a sound, they have to be a vibe or a felt style. Bel is certainly that.
