Album Review: Becca Mancari Observes “The Greatest Part” of Healing

Becca Mancari’s The Greatest Part makes me feel like I am shopping through life. It has a glittery, casual sounds that crosses between a 1960’s psychedelia and  2040’s visuality. Imagine it! A colorful future where all the choices you have in life are set up in aisles; get some milk and a box of cereal self-confidence. Okay! Maybe, I am focusing too much on the fantasy of this album, out June 26, but it is a new turn for Becca Mancari.

Becca’s sound has always been described as folkish and beautifully quieting. For however loud and bombastic she makes a songs, her music feel tethered to earthiness like a stream flowing through a silent night; obviously, you hear the stream more. Yet, The Greatest Part is more cosmic and dreamy like a stream in Jupiter. The new dynamic makes sense as Becca has always sung to her life experiences, but now she is singing to her life’s motivations and philosophies. Yes, she has had her fair share of dramas and dreams, but she is lyrically looking beneath those layers to observe intents and emotions.

We all are cosmic, especially when you consider that feeling can move within us like a planet orbiting the sun. Such a vibe can be felt in songs such as, “Like This,” “Stay With Me,” “Pretend,” and “Forgiveness.” Songs flow like synths and strings dancing with each other at Woodstock, of which the Greatest Part felt like an unique,  glorious combination of Courtney Barnett’ and Oh Wonder’s sound. Yup! These artists are not ones you could imagine to put together: one feeling like introspective rock and the other positive pop. Yet, this album is so different for Mancari in every way: from style to sentiment. She is creating rhythms that make you want to dance to pop jams while singing the verses every sad girl/woman has muttered in loneliness and grief.

I was charmed by The Greatest Part, and super happy to hear the sonic change in Becca. Trust! This album is NOT like the Becca Mancari we know, but it is richly different.Mancari’s voice is still hypnotically smooth and becomes the anchor for a new sound that does not mind pushing its own limits. The Greatest Part comes out June 26.
