Theatre Review: Olga Pericet Is Grace Incarnate At Repertorio Español
If ever there was a moment where I felt God works, it was watching Olga Pericet: Enfoque at the Repertorio Español. One of the best Flamenco dancers of all time, Pericet moved across that stage was so stunning that she appeared like the most beautiful women in the world. Grace took form in every step she tapped and every finger she curled to emanate a story that would mean different things to different people.
Relation is function. How we relate to our bodies can radiate in how we carry them. Olga Pericet sees her body as a work of art; every inch of it made to show human elegance. For over 90 minutes, she becomes the center of the universe. Every motion she does feels like a sentence of a novel that you are writing. There is no storyline to Olga Pericet: Enfoque, or, at least, not one that blatant. Yet, I kept on seeing romances, political thrillers, comedies, magical realism, and musicals throughout her motions. Every dance was a detail, and every detail could be another tale about a woman who fell in love or a fierce leader that sparked a revolution. You decide!
Imagine that! Imagine if your body, by solely its movement or presence, could launch thousands of films, millions of novels, and billions of poems. If Michelangelo were alive, he would have painted Pericet’s performance because that is how classically timeless it felt. The amount of rigor, passion, and precision she needed to keep herself through her performance and keep us entertained is nearly cosmic. For her show to be successful, she had to appear effortless, of which she seemed celestially so. That effortlessness proved essential in assuring that your mind was consistently dreaming up reasons why Mrs. Pericet danced.
Even though, in truth, she was dancing for the love of dance, Enfoque felt like a performance with an indescribable purpose. With guitars and singers backing her, you were transported to the streets of Spain and the alleys of Argentina, but time was never a factor, which is why I became so fascinated. Olga Pericet was so sophisticated and enthralling that time seemed to leave the space. All you wanted to do was see how much you could absorb from her energy, and trust me it was plenteous.
