TV Review: CW’s Stargirl Brings Hope For Future Generations
From the TRAILERS, I knew I was going to love CW’s Stargirl. Luke Wilson! Yes, Please! The Justice Society of America! Alrighty, Then! PURE SHAZAM VIBES! YAS, QUEEN! The tv show had emanated a cinematic vibe in visuals and presentation. After all, who does not know the movie of the young girl discovering her power. The only difference is that, in Stargirl, a young girl is discovering her superpower.
From Episode 1, Stargirl gives you Smallville meets The Flash in One Tree Hill. There is something classic Warner Bros about its style and even soundtrack: Hello, Hanson! Similar to Shazam, it anchors itself in the nostalgia of the late 90’s/ early 2000’s; when superheroes were still “dough-eyed” and brightened by hopefulness instead of jaded by another, apocalyptic threat. #Thanos I’m talking the days when flannel was common, older folk said “Howdy!,” and hanging at the diner with your family after a sweet stroll was not a public health threat. (Those were the days!) Yet, that “old time feel” is integral to attractive wholesomeness of the show, and Brec Bassinger’s star-making performance as Courtney/ Stargirl.

Like any super-hero show, the audience relies on its lead to invest on the outlandishness and super positivity of the “comic-book world;” a place where characters can find magical staffs that make them do cool things and spend every day of their life learning a moral lesson like, defending yourself from but also forgiving bullies or realizing that your family is your happiness. For this, Brec Bassinger as Courtney/ Stargirl is PERFECT. She is filled with wonder, eagerness, kindness, and boldness as she is as shocked as the audience that she found a “Cosmic Staff” and that her dad was apart of a super-hero league. Bassinger is similar to Tom Holland, in breathing an infectious youthfulness and excitement for her role; she is a kid that found out she can control a cosmic power and kick- ass. YAS!

The “old vs new” theme is essential to Stargirl’s storyline, which is why it will totally appeal to a rising generation of teens frustrated with how the “old ways worked,” particularly in defining the future. For God’s Sake! The villains of this show are called “The Injustice Society of America” and they call their evil project “New America.” Thus, it is up to Stargirl and the friends she lets in and her adult guides such as, Luke Wilson as “the cool, sitcom dad” Pat, to defeat archaic ideas of disruption to bring about a better tomorrow. Hence, it is up to the youth to save world from older mindsets and cruel perceptions. Yet, in the same Stargirl is discovering her lineage of heroes, other characters like, Jake Austin Walker’s Henry or Hunter Samsone’s Cameron, must figure out if they will follow the same, old villainous paths they inherit. Ugh, I LOVE IT! What a great story! Stargirl plays Tuesdays at 8pm On CW.
