TV Review: You’re The Worst Goes From Romantic Comedy To Tragic One In Season 4

For You’re The Worst fans, Gretchen and Jimmy are two of the worst people you could ever so devoutly want together. In real life, we would HATE these two, but on FX we are as loyal as a cult. Thus, when they broke up just five seconds after getting engaged, the tv series’ theme song promise of “You’re going to leave me anyway” left us as star-crossed as Romeo and Juliet, if Romeo was a narcissistic, British writer and Juliet was a music publicist whose emotions ranged from extreme sadness to semi-sadness. The point is we knew the end, but we did not expect it. Yet after the premiere, you will appreciate it.

GRETCHEN AND JIMMY HATE EACH OTHER, and it is fun to watch. It is like You’re The Worst took in a breath and decided to exhale fire. Each joke is laced with with and very real tumultuousness. I ask anyone to name a break-up that left no one feeling less than their selves, which makes Gretchen’s tussle between shattering emotionally and complete apathy relatable, especially for someone who has been dumped. Aya Cash’s performance is perfect, and will have everyone that has been dumped giving a sad, “Amen Sister!”. She just feels like a ticking time-bomb, and with her history of depression explored last season, you can’t help but be scared for her. She is so manic that you wonder if she is fighting an inevitable fall? Meanwhile Kether Donohue’s Lindsay and Desmin Borges’ Edgar get to add layers to their characters and acting chops. It is never easy to be friends with someone in mourning, and both characters arise to give both laughs and surprising reality checks/ balances to the mourning Gretchen and Jimmy. Yes, Edgar and Lindsay are the “serious ones” now, and their hookup could lead to them being the “New Gretchen and Jimmy”; two people whose “just sex” oath will catch major feelings and backlash.

I love Chris Greere as Jimmy. He is 100% horrible as a human being, but you get these little moments, maybe in a glance or smirk, where you see he wants better, which shows the brilliance of Greere as an actor. Yes, Jimmy is a negative Nancy whom is convinced everything ends badly. Yet, he is anchored in some semblance of humanity in his unwavering desire for SOMETHING GOOD! As the season progresses, seeing how Greere fleshes out his longing and fear of Gretchen will fascinate those who have been “the wrong party” and regret their inability to make things right. Ugh! It sucks to bring bridge and realize ash does not cement. After all, Gretchen wants revenge, and SHE DESERVES IT! Thus, get excited for a new season that truly is new. The tone has completely changed, and brought a new level of vulnerability and realism to a set of characters that can feel too outlandish, at times. Yes, their craziness is the show’s charm, but now, their vulnerability will keep you glued. For More Information On You’re The Worst Click Here.
