Concert Review: NAO Is One Of The Best Performers Ever At Brooklyn Steel

It is official; NAO is a performer. Blessed with a personality that radiates as much as the stage lights upon her, Brooklyn Steel was beyond packed to see the British Songstress. Having reviewed her the year before at Bowery Ballroom, I was sentimentally proud to see her go from a venue that could fill about 550 to one of near 2,000 within a few months time. Seeing a warehouse packed to the brim with people eager to sing-along to her phenomenal album, For All We Know, was a heart-warming reminder that the creme can rise to the top because of its sweetness.

NAO is, sincerely, one of the best shows you will ever see. She gives herself spiritually and physically to each song, and breaksout into dances that seemed more cathartic than choreographed; as if she was so deeply filled by the emotional truths she sang that she had to shake it off. Her music goes straight for the lust and love of relationships; veiling brutally honest lyricism with funkadelic infusions.  “In The Morning” was a standout track of the night, along with her encore “Bad Blood”, because they gave  NAO vocal opportunities to riff through her range and emanate that sweet love can turn bitter. This young woman can transform any vocal note into a victory novel; giving it layers of story and human investment. She has an uncanny capacity to transport you into the moments of her songs.  “Fool To Love” and “We Don’t Give A”felt like anthemic declarations that NAO, and all of us, were no longer accepting lies from our partners or any untruths we tell ourselves to stay by their side. The crowd bounced and pranced like, we were NAO’s marching band rather than audience. Yet, it is easy to realize and feel such an empowerment when NAO stretches her voice as if she is shooting an arrow to that sky rather than a high note to the crowd.

Every single person relished NAO’s dramatic flare because, again, it only elaborated the tensions of her songs. From “Trophy” to “Feels Like Perfume” or the Apple featured “Zillionaire”, the night was filled with tracks that aim for the “tug of heart war” known as love. With a voice as plush as velvet, the singer is equally “plush” as a person. Soft-spoken and unbelievably kind, you were almost caught off-guard by NAO’s friendliness. How can this fierce femme-warrior powerfully emanating her love in “Adore You” and “Get To Know Ya” also be cool and approachable? The two are usually and unfortunately not associated together: strength and amiability. Yet, in between becoming  a literal, singing force to be reckoned, she was lovely, and made her fans feel grateful for investing their hearts in following hers.
