Album/Concert Review: Velvet Negroni Debuts Neon Brown
Frank Ocean Alert! Frank Ocean Alert! There are many artists that are either compared to or compare themselves to Frank Ocean because that latter has shown music is as much an essence as it is a sound. What he has done is reveals that art accessible to the everyday person because the “everyday person’s” life is ART! A love or sad song is written about what every person has experienced in their daily, of which Velvet Negroni understands this. In this sense, he is an essence.
An exceptional artist goes beyond sonic to become a frequency itself. At The Standard, he was a MOOD. A total aesthetic draped in a personality that smiled in warmth but sung to heat. It is as if Velvet sees people like walking pyre; trying to keep on burning while contemplating if there is even any fire left. He sings with passion for those struggling to keep it, which makes his songs feel like Picassos; abstract re-tellings of how it “looks” to be a human being. The great things is that his meekness feels like a bag of wealth; a purse of golden thoughts that he transfers into music with etched precision, which leads me to my album review: Velvet Negroni’s Neon Brown.

Velvet Negroni is giving me Sade and Blood Orange/ Wyclef Jean vibes. His debut, Neon Brown, demands to be played on loop as he pleads his lover to see the depth he has gone to love them. I feel that. Everyone has had a moment of pained shock at seeing a lover become blind to how much you give to them. While you shouldn’t have expectations, Velvet Negroni questions if there is a standard to how you love and should be loved.

Negroni’s album feels more like a sonic, tall-tale. A virtual reality built on the melodies and spoken/sung poesies of a man figuring out love in a world he cannot figure. In some ways, our relationships are like safety nests. Emotional spaces where we can feel protected from “the world” and hopeful that all its negativity can never outweigh the joy of being you with “your person.” Lyrically, Negroni focuses on the inner turmoil that occurs when “your person” doesn’t feel yours anymore. #gutting The sentimental perplexities of his verses strangely make his sounds feel more whimsical like, fantasy world are not built from your dreams as much as your escape from real nightmares.

Vocally, again, Velvet Negroni moves like Sade with a vocality of Blood Orange and Wyclef Jean. Meanwhile, his soundscape basks like Frank Ocean took a thousand baths for love. There is something digitally mystical about Neon Brown; as if Velvet Negroni has found a wand in his synthesizer.
